Norah Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 I'm 18 and I'd like to start using birth control...but the problem is I don't want my parents to know about it. If I go to my doctor and get a perscription for it, and I go to my pharmacy, will my parents find out their insurance is covering my birth control pills??? Not sure what to do, to get around this....advice please --Norah

Go to your doctor, get a prescription for the birth control that's right for you (pill, patch, shot, etc.). Take the prescription to a chain of drug stores other than the one your parents use. When you get the Rx filled, pay cash. Don't go through your parent's insurance. Your privacy is assured once you reach 18. If the pharmacy staff says anything about it to your parents, post here again and I'll recommend some high powered attorneys that will get the drug store chain put in your name.

kellyp1 Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 First off, there are many reasons to be on birth control. Being on birth control can reduce the risk of female cancers. If has been shown that women that are on birth control for at least 10 years can cut down their risk for ovarian and uterus cancers. Second, I was on it when I was 18 using my parents insurance and they never knew (not that they would care). You are 18 and I believe there are patient/pharmacists privelage that prevent them from telling your parents. You can double check on this though. Bottom line is that your parents will not get a report or anything else telling them what Rx's were ordered that month, year, etc. unless they have a limit with their insurance company. You probably have a health card, call them. I would definitely take it to a pharmacy on the other side of town though. That way you won't run into your folks while you are picking your Rx up. But think about if your parents find it, will they be more upset that you did not tell them? As I get older, I know some of the things I freaked about at 18 ended up being ok with my parents. In less I want to stop seeing my boyfriend. Yes I'm 18, but I also live under their roof, they provide me the car to go see my boyfriend, and pay for my college.....so telling them isn't an option.....they would be extremely upset if I told them I was active....maybe since I'm not married, and its against their moral beliefs of christianity, I figure what I believe, what I want and do is my business, and its not something I need to tell them. I'm not trying to keep it from them and seem cruel...i'm doing it for reasons they wouldn't understand. They don't think its possible to be in love at 18....--Norah
daterhater Posted December 12, 2004 Posted December 12, 2004 lie to them and say you have really severe cramps. a lot of girls go on birth control for cramps. better start faking extreme pain. a few months from now, go on birth control. also girls take birth control for acne somtimes. if you have really bad acne, say you want to take it for acne.

Each time I go to pick up my depo shot, I never receive any type of statement from the pharmacist. I only receive it from the doctor's office. There is nothing to worry about.

The shot has worked wonders for many people. To tell someone randomly not to get it isn't giving sound advice. Posting your reasons for not recommending the shot is one thing, but just to write "don't get it" isn't really helpful. Queen B Posted December 13, 2004 Posted December 13, 2004 Here's an idea...ask your girl friends where they go for BC? Chances are one of them goes to a family planning/women's health/community health clinic that they would reccomend. OR Look under Family Planning in the Yellow pages...
