i am only 25, and i hate being called ma'am...i feel soo old! i know it is proper, but jeese!

It used to irk me a bit, now I appreciate the show of respect. Makes me feel like I have to live up to something though! ;)

I say it to younger people too, depending on the circumstances. That can be kinda fun!

My 16 year old calls me, "Pa", and the 15 year old calls me, "Old man".......I hated it at first, but now it doesn't bother me a bit.

I refer to people as "sir" and "ma'am" too. It's better than saying "Hey you". It was just her being polite.

I know EXACTLY what you are talking about. I have had premature grey hair since I was 19 and right around 24 I was in the mall and this teenager (now mind you, she is like only 7 or 8 years younger) comes to me and says "Pardon me SIR, do you have the time?"

I was shocked, insulted, and replied with a "f you no!---and I am not a sir."

A buddy of mine always looks around when he is called sir and says "is my dad here?"

If people aren't supposed to call you sir, what are they supposed to call you?

Its not like miss and ma'am where there is a difference...sir is a guy, no matter what his age may be.

Posted

I refer to my four year old as "sir" all the time....thank you "sir", please "sir" :) ....I may be southern, but I totally think it's a respect thing.

<<< Calls most everybody Sir or Ma'am

I don't mean it as disrespectful or that they are old.. it's just how I address people I'm not familiar with.. those people in my life are called more colorful things.. JK JK JK

To a teenager, anyone over 20 looks "old."

On the other hand, perhaps it was simply a courteous way of addressing you. I use the term frequently.

Interestingly enough, I am still in the habit of addressing the now elderly adults (that I knew as adults when I was a boy) as Mr. Smith or Mrs. Smith when I encounter them. Anyone else find themselves doing this?

You really like the library huh Mike :p

Anyways, I am only 21 but there are times when kids call me ma'am and I'm like, "WTF? I AM NOT OLD". I almost get a heart attack but hey it's part of life. I guess since they are smaller than us they see us like old farts. It's probably the same thing we do to other people unconsciously.
