Hi

I just posted a romantic closeup photo of me and my girlfriend on my facebook

- when this dutch guy posted this: "Leuke foto ;-)"

Can some of you dutch speaking people please help me interpret the wording AND the meaning of the post, including the winking face?

Thanks :-)

Regards,

MicroMe

In this case I interpret the winking smiley as being ironic...why would he otherwise be giving a flirting wink to us??

As a native Dutch speaker - he is being genuine. We include smilies all the time.

@man in the box: You dont distinct between the different smilies...a winking smiley shurely means very different things in different contexts (!)

...from ironic to flirting, joking, u name it...

But thanx for your input ;-)....:-)

The winking smiley is also added indiscriminately to messages with a positive meaning in my experience. I doubt it is a Dutch thing and I am pretty sure this is nothing more than "cool photo bro".

I can do it to:

dutch is not a nice lg.

Up yours ;-)

Honestly genuine.

@ cheeksss:

In my opinion is this a matter of my jealousy, combined with a bit of dutch interpretation.

Maybe you can help me out anyways? :-)

What exactly are you worried about, MicroMe? I'm Dutch as well and I agree with man_in_the_box: this comment is perfectly normal. Of course there COULD be more to it, but it doesn't show from this.

woah....insecure much? Jesus man.......

Ehhmmm... what do you expect from us exactly?

It's two words combined with a general use smiley.

It's not like it's a secret dutch message that expresses willingness to sleep with your GF. That would be:

"Wow schatje, je ziet er goed uit. Vanavond batsen?"

You really need to give us more context if you think there's something wrong with that sentence. Is he an ex? Is your GF a known slut that sleeps with men who compliment her on her pictures?

"Wow, dankjewel zeg! Laten we maar doen."

Beware a man bearing a wooden horse as a gift.

Worse

Beware a man bearing a pair of wooden shoes as a gift.

Your sentence shows why google translate is not always the greatest. This is how it is translated:

"Wow baby, you look good. Tonight Shovels?"

Hence why so many non-speaking English really mess up English...as I did Dutch.

"Wow, dankjewel zeg! Laten we maar doen."

But hey if it works this quick....I really need to learn Dutch! :) I don't need to translate THIS one.

Or should I say.... ;)

Haha, so you wanna shovel tonight? (I guess you know very well what it means from the context, so Google Translate did a fine enough job.)

In all honesty that's the most hilarious word for sex ever. Cracks me up everytime.

It's pretty obvious that this dutchman is moving in on your girl. You gotta watch out for the dutch. We're a crafty bunch.

You mean as in the Predator catchline or is there a deeper meaning behind it?

I probably also killed it now but whatever.
