Seemed like Ex became interested, started contact, but then he stopped?

My ex of 2.5 years started emailing/texting me a year after we broke up. He told me several times that he wanted to be my friend, that there was too much bad in the relationship, and maybe in the future there could be a chance to work it out. I couldn't accept to be just friends with him, and went to limited contact for a few months in order to move on.

 

Suddenly he sent me a text that said "he's reminded of me in so many ways", starting asking questions about how I'm doing through email, and started going into surprising depth about how he's been, and what he's been up to, and that he's glad that things have been going well for me. He even brought up a few good memories. Not going to lie, him initiating contact left me with hope that there's a chance to get back together. After I told him I was surprised to hear from him, he ended a lengthy with "I'll always want to be your friend."

 

Since the break up, I've deleted him from Facebook to keep from knowing what's been going on in his life. Since we started talking again, I decided to request him back on Facebook. He accepted my friend request the next day. Turns out, there are several pictures of him and another girl holding hands, kissing, going to fancy restaurants, but his relationship status was listed as single.

 

I got upset at seeing the pictures, and immediately blocked him. Then I emailed him and asked how things were going with his girlfriend. Instead of replying with great detail, he gave me a very short response "don't have a girlfriend, not talking to anyone right now. hope you're doing well." And now he won't talk, respond to my emails or anything.

When he said he always wanted to be your friend, they was a clear sign he had no interest. He probably started emailing you again to actually try to be your friend. Either that or to test the waters is my best guess. If looks like a waste of time really. It seems like he is just curious and wasting your time.

Why did you guys breakup in the first place, how old are you two? And how long were you together?
