my kitty, Gracie Mae, has lost a dramatic amount of weight, she was only about 8 lbs. to begin with. she would barely eat last night and this morning vomited after drinking water. she is acting very "depressed", tired...

so i was took her to the vet this a.m. She has started getting jaundice looking, so the vet said it was her liver. either because she stopped eating or from infection or both. so they are putting her on antibiotics and pregnazone, to help with inflammation of bile ducts.

But they do not Really even know what the exact problem is.

Has anyone had this happen with their? And what was the outcome?

i am sooo sad :( and i feel like such a bad kitty mom.

Sounds like a good kitty mom to me! You took her to the vet.

Sadly, a big part of diagnosis is ruling out illness.

I've been through various forms of medical elimination before a proper diagnosis has been made. Give the drugs time to work and follow the vets advice. You may need to change her diet too.

One time the vets put my Tiger on an antibiotic and pred. (short term) before they had a diagnosis -- more of a precaution and to see if the reaction to the drugs would help narrow down the diagnosis. After a month (and lots of expensive tests) they finally found the real problem and turned out the drugs were what he needed, just be on them longer!

Give kitty a gentle hug and spoil her!

I hope they find out what is wrong w/ your kitty soon Tat....

We kitty-mom's have to stay together.

I feel like the "step" mom of my boyfriends cat...even tho, she came from my family's farm and I brought her to him.

She gets angry everytime we're out of town for the weekend, so we decided to try something different.

A toy or a new collar from pet-smart upon our return. She's got an entire room full of her stuff...it's crazy.

Anyways, short story long, she got sick a while back and we had to take her to the vet...she had it in her lil kitty mind that she needed a treat a toy or something for going on that long, aganizing trip 2 blocks away to the vet, only to be there for 15 minutes....kids anyways.

You did what you could to take care of her right away! Nothing wrong with that.

I also have two cats, one of which has all kinds of weird snorting problems. I'm relating this to you because for her the vet also prescribed prednisone and an antibiotic. And, well, it worked. I had the same experience Hokey had too, where I stopped the drug too soon, and all her symptoms came back. But, once back on it for a little while, the inflammation cleared up for good. I hope that this gives you some hope this combination can work for your kitty too!

Something else I do when I have a sick kitty is check out "The New Natural Cat Book" by Anitra Frazer. I am not into natural medicines at all, and I certainly could be in "better tune" with my cats- but the book does have a good description of symptoms and what they could mean. And, if the vet can not treat her with medicine, they maybe you can use a diet in this book (although all are time consuming!) or some vitamins or something? I don't think it's ever recommend to mix natural meds and modern medicine. There can be some reactions.

I use this book when one of their eyes mysterious swells up, etc.

Best wishes to your kitty!

I don't have any advice but I do have 2 kittys that I love very much and I understand your sadness! I hope your kitty gets well soon!!

well, gracie is ok. she has a Fatty liver, which is caused by the kitty not eating for what ever reason, then the fatty acids build up in the liver, overwhelm it, and the liver stops functioning properly.

so basically for some reason she stopped eating, and that is the end result.

so now i have to almost force feed her food every couple hours, although she is eating on her own now.

it is like refeeding an anorexic almost...which is almost Karmic....because i used to be terrible anorexic and had to be force fed. strange how things play out.

but hopefully, if she starts eating properly her liver functions should return to normal, and she should be ok.

she is soo weak she can barely jump up onto my bed...which is pretty high ( i put a stool up for her). and she is still very Jaundice, her tounge, mouth and skin are so pathetically yellow :(:(

so pittiful!

awww.....

at least you found out what was wrong...and definatly nothing to mess with.

We had a cat when I was growing up that quit eating this food that we got....evidently her "taste changed"...which, if I remember correctly is when I decided if she can change her mind about things, then yes, I can too...."Mom...I hate vegetaaaables"....still cracks my mom up!

Anyways...give the gracie lotsa hugs!
