Anxiety medication

Recommended Posts

Clonazepam works well...but is highly addictive.

Anxiety is dramatically reduced after just 20 mins of taking the med.

Side effects are common with almost all drugs.......

I just heard a doctor's radio show where he recommended doing specific deep breathing exercises for anxiety. He said anxious people take shallow breaths. It's FREE and NO side effects! Google it!

Anyone on anti anxiety meds?? I want to know how quick it helped and how do you feel now taking the meds?? Any side effects?? All the info as possible

Yes, it took effect within the first week, I feel great, minimal side effects besides increased appetite.

That being said, you should be talking to your doctor about this, not us. We don't know your medical/psychological/family history well enough to know whether you need them at all or how you'd react.

google benzodiazepam withdrawal. I have known several people who've gone through their own personal hell withdrawing. Also, check out what Heather Aston, MD, has to say about benzodiazepams. Clonazepam/Klonopin in a benzodiazepam.

Well, I was sort of thrown on a low dose of xanax a few years back when I was having anxiety that stemed from an underlying tick borne illness. It worked wonders for me. Since Lyme depletes gaba, the xanax helped balance it for me. However, this is a benzo and one needs to tread with caution while on this medication. I do know it worked wonders. But, it was a process to wean safely from daily use to occasional. Best to Speak with your doc about this kind of stuff. Push for natural alternatives is my suggestion if possible. Good luck.

I think you're best option is talking to YOUR doctor/therapist - building a relationship and figuring out what works best. There is no way of knowing what will work for you based on what you hear from us or read on line. Sure, it helps and gives you ideas - but we all react differently to meds.

Good Luck :D

Naw, don't waste time talking to a "therapist." Only an MD can prescribe meds.

I was diagnosed with PTSD and went through a couple different therapists who prescribed things like Yoga and breathing exercises both of which just made me worse. Finally I went to a real doctor and he gave me Zoloft and I've felt great ever since then.

The bad part is that there are side effects and when you stop taking it there is a withdrawal that is really bad.

IMHO, if you have a depressive disorder - feel sad, unmotivated, crying for no reason, don't want to leave the house, scared to death of nothing - get help from a real doctor as soon as possible. I wish I had done it years ago.

busprione/buspar. Non-addictive, minor side affects, some studies also show it helps with minor depression. I found it worked farily quickly - but best way to describe how it felt - drink one or two glasses of white wine, put out your arms and spin around twice, then sit down. Ya - I was less anxious but a lttile hard to concentrate or work. Stopping it had no issues (withdrawl) for me.

For very fast anxiety needs - benedryl (allgergy medication) work well, but you might fall asleep so I like it before bed or if I wake up with anxiety. You build up a tollerance to this - so only use it every now and then in a pinch

Yoga and meditation work well - but they take time and effort to push the thoughts out of your head.

P.S. I did like the "real benzo's" very much, but my doctor simply refused to give me more than a few every now and then due to their addictive nature.

I think over time they had/have helped, but to what extent I'm not sure to be honest. I also don't want to be too reliant on them. I had been off them (citalopram) for a few weeks recently and noticed that I seemed to be more irritable and easily upset than before. The downside to taking them though, is that I'm pretty sure it wasn't helping with the sexual side of things, which felt a bit of a dilemma, so came off them! However, a couple of days ago I caved in and took them/started taking them again, as my moods had been terrible again lately.

I was just prescribed Ativan. Going through a lot right now with trying to raise 4 kids on my own, going to school, and working. Also dealing with my ex of 15 years having a new girlfriend and not doing much eith his kids. Im starting to let my grades slip, and no initiative for anything. I haven't filled it yet though. Trying to do other things to help me through this.

Speak with a psychiatrist for a suggestion on which would work best for you.

I take klonopin (benzo) which others have mentioned is highly addictive. I only use it on an as needed basis, and the smallest amount possible.
