Is this guy trying to mess with my head?

There is a guy I met last January who goes to a different college than me, an hour away. Turns out, he also went to my high school (we were never friends but in the same grade-we knew faces but never actually talked). He recently was broken up with by his girlfriend in December so he wasn't too open about dating and was still upset.

We started texting for a few months and I hung out with him once for his nephews birthday (I stayed the night but only made out with him). That night, when I stayed I told him I'm a virgin and he didn't pressure me into anything. He then told me all about his ex-girlfriends, who he's slept with and about his family. After that night, he didn't talk to me as much, distanced himself and I figured he thought of me as a rebound or a booty call. I stopped talking to him as well.

In the summer, he occasionally would text me random things. Later in the summer, he started texting me more about my Facebook pictures, his summer trips, my summer trips, his family, etc. I ended up hanging out with him another time and this time he acted like we were about to be dating. We went out with his friend that time and when he was in the bathroom or talking to other people, his best friend asked me if I like his friend and that he likes me a lot and that I'm all he talks about. He then told me that I'm clearly not a booty call but I am more than a friend. He also said he didn't know where he wanted it to go. I stayed the night again and only made out with him, he didn't pressure me again (but asked why not when I said no, then he didn't argue. He said he loved kissing me too. When I left his place, he said we would hang out that weekend when he was in my town, and we texted for a few days after that.

One night, after the night I stayed, he texted me drunk and broke down saying he thinks he's depressed and he kept apologizing saying he's never this wreckless. He also told me I was the only one who knew about his depression. A few nights after that, he texted again saying he was sorry about the previous drunk texting night and said that I helped him a lot with what I said.

After that he stopped talking to me again. Two weeks later, I accidentally texted him after drinking (stupid I know), asking him what was going on and why our relationship is so back and forth. It was after drinking but it was how I felt, I was hurt that he kept talking to me then stopping. He asked me what I meant and I told him we didn't talk like we used to and he never responded.

The weird thing about him is that I felt very "connected" to him and comfortable with him, which made me fall so hard. I also got this weird feeling that someday we'd end up together (never felt the same way with previous guys I've dated). Now I'm sadly still upset.

He hasn't talked to me at all now and it's been two months. Then, out of the blue, yesterday he liked my Facebook profile picture. I know Facebook is a silly thing to base this on, but he doesn't talk to me for a couple months then likes a picture of me? It's very confusing, considering he isn't even trying to at least be my friend.

Is he playing a joke on me? Guys do you like a girls profile picture to mess with them?

Sorry to hear about your situation. It's hurtful, and you haven't done anything to deserve that treatment.

I wouldn't read too much into "liking" your picture. He seems to want you to know that he's still around and may even want to know that you're still an option for him. But I stress the word option. You are not a priority.

In my experience, guys who pull disappearing acts like either have major commitment issues and aren't worth the trouble; or, they have decided they don't want a relationship with you and don't have the cajones to just tell you that; OR they have another girl on the go. In any case, this guy doesn't know what he wants. Bad news. Stay away if he comes sniffing around again.
