Is it just me? I feel like I always hated the word b.o.y.f.r.I.e.n.d. it just fel so unattached and boring and frankly lame. I always fantasized about what kind of creative names I could come up with...I could never find one for my former, maybe that's why we broke up :p

He always did find some good ones for me though, em-lily is my favorite xD but then, I've always had cool nicknames for some reason. The best I could come up with for him was joshua-face and I always just referred to him by his name anyway, it felt more real and respectful. But nicknames definitely become a problem when they get shared between people. He always used to call be gorgeous, or ma pretty, or whatever, which are in themselves rather unoriginal when used so often and amongst other people. He even called his ex girlfriend one of my nicknames on facebook in public, which was less than tasteful and destroyed my soul.

But I still don't like calling him my "ex" either...I dont cut people out of my life, so such a harsh term doesn't seem fitting for someone I loved so very dearly.

Anyone else have thoughts?

Ex is a good term in my opinion. It is succinct and to the point. They were once your boyfriend/girlfriend and they no longer are.

I like ex because it differentiates the person they are now from the person I loved.

You could always say my "previous boyfriend" and you can say "my man" instead of boyfriend.

What did you / would you call him when he was in your life, before he was your boyfriend? My friend?

To me, "ex" doesn't necessarily mean you have "cut him out" of your life, but it is an intentional label that communicates to people that you were once partnered and you are no longer. Whether you have "cut him out" of your life will be clear from context - if you are talking about him, introducing him, etc, then obviously you haven't cut him out.

So is it important to you to communicate to people that he was once your boyfriend? If so, then "ex" is clearly the word. Trying to dance around it, like saying "previous boyfriend" will just make it even more obvious and awkward, and still sounds just as much like you cut him out of your life, and are even maybe trying to draw attention to it by highlighting a different term that sticks out.

But if you can let go of needing to communicate that he was once your boyfriend, then just go back to "friend" or something.
