I have a question, I know this may sound odd to someone who doesn't know much about what I'm going through, I'd rather not disclose a lot for various reasons but I'm having a procedure done on the 1st of december and I need to find a way to soften my liver...

Does anyone know of any supplements or other ways to soften your liver? It is really important and other than a two week remedy (which I only have 8 days so this won't work) I don't know what remedies are available to do this...?!

Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

I have no idea...doesn't alcohol damage your liver?

What exactly do you mean by "soften your liver"?

Making it soft=Making it more pliable when they go in to operate on me....most livers are pretty flexible but I was wondering if there is anything I can do to be extra sure my liver is soft enough to be moved around so that it won't get knicked during my procedure.

ask your PCP, or the person doing the procedure...i would be leary of health advice from anyone else, especially on liver issues........cannot screw with that!

True, I would necessarily take the advice unless speaking with my PCP but I was hoping maybe I could get some suggestions but I know if no one knows then they can't tell me ;) But I though it was worth a try! :D

You know, I don't think you want to mess around with making your liver "softer", even if there is a way that could be done. The liver is very vascular, it has a large blood supply, and I don't think you would want it to be so soft that just touching it causes bleeding.

Livers get "hard" due to scarring, aka cirrhosis, I believe.

Cool, well my liver shouldn't be scarred or anything, so I'll probably be okay.

I'm just really nervous about this procedure, it's pretty serious so I guess being the control freak I am, I'm trying to do all I can to make the surgeon's job easier. :p

I appreciate you all responding though, :D

Thanks so much, I'm checking out that link now and going to call my local health food store to see if this is something that might work for me...thanks!:D

What you're asking doesn't even make any sense, sorry. You can't "soften" an internal organ. If you have concerns about your upcoming procedure (is it a liver biopsy?) you should asking your physician/surgeon, not a bunch of non-doctors on a relationship message board...........and do NOT take any kind of homeopathic/herbal supplements (dandelion, milk thistle, etc) without *first* confirming it's safe with your doc. These things aren't "harmless" and because they DO effect the liver, could have serious consequences in light of your upcoming procedure. The liver is nothing to fool with. Talk to your doctor, that's what they're there for.

emm,

You said that you can't "soften" and internal organ. Actually Milk Thistle has been proven in Clinical studies to be helpful in treating Cirrhosis, which is hardening of the liver. So, in effect, if you are treating hardening wouldn't it make sense that you are softening? I agree that you should always talk to your physician, but not all conventional physicians are well versed in clinic research of alternative medicine. You should check out the research on milk thistle and consider bringing it to your physician rather than relying on the hope that they keep up to date on alternative health care as well. It is my experience that alternative medicine and conventional western medicine are just now starting to cross paths. Their are a lot of miss informed physicians on both sides.

Ohh this is all done and over with, I went on a "water only" fast for 24 hours to "clense" my liver and make sure it wasn't "tough" the procedure I had done was near the liver and the surgeon needed to make sure that it was "pliable" which it must have been cuz all went well...
