Faith13/2 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I know this isn't exactly the right thread to be asking this question, but I figure since some of your SOs live abroad someone may know the answer.. I'll be traveling within the week to the UK from the US for 6 months. Can I bring my Birth Control pills without an issue from customs? I receive them from Planned Parenthood therefore I have no prescription for them, just the cartridges with my name on them and the date those pills should start..
Emilia Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 The only issue I had once at Heathrow airport where I was asked to empty my bag and the security woman loudly asked me what pills they were. 2

Well that I can deal with, as long as they don't confiscate them. lol Edited September 20, 2013 by Faith13/2 1
Balzac Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Rx policy in UK differs from USA. Many drugs are available from a chemist just for asking. If you lose your pills or they are damaged, replacement is easy. I guess it goes w/o saying that you need to check your medical Ainsurance coverage or and I say AND buy a travelers coverage such as SOS out of Philadelphia. Mny employers do this as standard practice. These services cover much more than medical care. 1

My SO has assured me that if by any chance the pills do become confiscated he can get some through private practice while I'm in the UK.(He works for the NHS) I just get a bit worried about these things and over think far to much.. lol
Balzac Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 It's over thinking only if you fail to accept alternative resolution. Living expat for 6 months demands consideration of natural disaster, acts of terrorism and the entanglements of what normal insurances exclude. I've traveled the world and but always had travelers coverage. Had to use it a few times for reasons other than medical care. 1

Thanks for the advice I'll definitely call around today and see what I can do.

Balzac Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I think it's prudent. My expectation is that within your 6 months you'd travel outside UK as well.

There's always a possibility of that happening so getting the travelers insurance seems like a great idea..Thanks again

UK is in the European Union, where I live. No problems with pills back and forth from the US. Source: myself. I guess you'd be having problems if you were transporting a bag full of pills. That would obviously mean you have some kind of trade/business going on. The only issue I had once at Heathrow airport where I was asked to empty my bag and the security woman loudly asked me what pills they were. Never heard of that. If you keep pills in their blister in their box... were they loose pills? I don't think they have any rights to ask about regular pills.
yum yum Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 (edited) As long as the pills are in their original packing there should be no problems at all. They have to be in your hand luggage is the only thing. In the event that they are confiscated (which I do not have any knowledge of it happening) go to the nearest chemist as they are available over the counter. If you want to play overcautious then take a phone number for the place you get them originally and customs can ring them. Oh also customs are within their rights to ask what they are for but I will say in UK it is rare. Edited September 21, 2013 by yum yum
