napy666 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Every time I find a guy he doesn't drive? I know I don't drive but come on why why is it that most 20 somethings do not drive in this day and age? I don't get it. Then most of them don't want to use the bus or subway or train to get around it's like WTF. I don't know a lot of the time I think about my ex and wonder man he went all out for me and yet these new guys will not.
GI_Joy Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 do you live in the city? I lived in a big city for 4 years, it would've been senseless to have a car given how expensive gas was and how hard it was to find parking.
Mr.Mango Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 The whole big city argument is totally valid, but I'm noticing a similar trend where I live, which is a stitched together series of tiny cities. Our public transport is abysmal and biking around takes far too long and can be super dangerous. I've asked some people why they don't drive and it's usually because they find it too much of a hassle or too expensive. Mind you, the average 20-something today is usually in a financially tough spot, so in most cases the expense excuse is reasonable. Don't get me wrong though, I don't entirely agree with the trend either. For every person I find who simply can't afford it, there are at least 2 who are just too damn lazy or prefer freeloading to not drive. You wouldn't believe how many house parties I've gone to where friends (or even strangers) begin begging for a ride home cause they have work in the morning... (makes sense right?) I personally find owning a car a big step in responsibility (unless you live in a city that doesn't warrant owning one, like New York or something). It's also a major hassle being friends with someone who is practically stranded where ever they go, definitely not a fan. I bought my car when I was 17 with savings from working a minimum wage job, so it's definitely not impossible to do.

I'd expect that from someone in NJ or NYC, where a lot of people get around just fine using public transportation... but sheesh, I make a near-poverty wage and I can still afford to drive! All I can think of is that these guys you describe must be pretty young... boys nowadays just don't go in for cars as much as they did 25+ years ago, when my 1st car was a secondhand '70 'Cuda...
devilish innocent Posted September 21, 2013 Posted September 21, 2013 I heard a blurb on the radio about this not too long ago. The number of 20-somethings who drive really has gone down from what it was in the past. Part of it is the bad economy which makes purchasing and owning a car more expensive. Another part of the reason is that so many young people like to spend all of their time on smart phones, tablets, etc. Being a passenger means they can still do this when they're travelling, whereas driving they can't. So they choose not to drive so as not to give up that luxury.
Author napy666 Posted September 21, 2013 Author Posted September 21, 2013 I would love to own a car and license and drive around I just can't pass those darn DMV tests hahahaha they make them too hard and too much money to pass.
