happywithlife Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 My bpyfriend and I have been dating for about 9 months now. He is absolutley wonderful. We are both divorced, with kids, and both back in school. Needless to say, neither of use has a large dispossable income right now. My birthday is coming up and I always get a nice check from two family members. Since we have never been afforded the opportunity for a weekend away, I'd love to use the money for a weekend birthday get away. Especially since we are both kid free that weekend. Do you think its ok for me to offer this idea? Or might I cause hurt feelings b/c my boyfriend doesn't have the cashflow to offer this on his own? 1
salparadise Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 I'd say make the offer and just be sensitive about how you word it. Don't wait for him to say he can't afford it, just say this is what you want to do with the money and it's entirely your treat for the both of you. I hope it works out for you! 1

I think this is spot on. He, if secure with himself and the relationship, should be ONLY pleased that you would do this for the both of you. Selfless and considerate. If I were the guy, i'd be pleased that you would use that money to include me. Ego boost for certain... 2
veggirl Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 Sounds awesome! And knowing it's coming from gifts from others, it's not really like you're all "you can't pay but I can"....it's more like "wow X and Y were so generous, lets do something fun together to celebrate" 2
crederer Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 No, I wouldn't have a problem with it. Just don't rub it in his face that you're funding the escapade and it should be fine. 1
Phantom888 Posted September 20, 2013 Posted September 20, 2013 You would know his reaction better than any of us. My girlfriend did an AMAZING birthday weekend for me last month, and I was super happy. Best birthday of my life. This is your birthday, so you should be able to share it with him how ever you want. He should be thrilled.
Author happywithlife Posted September 22, 2013 Author Posted September 22, 2013 Just an update. We talked about taking a weekend trip w/ my b-day money. At first he said no, I should spend the money on me. I said, it would be spending it on me by giving me time to enjoy special time w/ him. That changed his mind pretty quickly and we're going away next weekend
