jzlove Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 Just been hearing the term "courtship" so much, but never know what are its differences from "dating". Can anyone advice? And a general survey, which do you prefer, and why?
RowanRavyn Posted November 23, 2004 Posted November 23, 2004 IMO Dating is more casual. Courtship is more...formal...more pursuit instead of assumption.
Dazed and Confuzed Posted November 25, 2004 Posted November 25, 2004 I think they could be used interchangeably... generally though, courting just sounds more... serious.
Wolvesbaned Posted November 27, 2004 Posted November 27, 2004 They're the same. But I agree that courting implies "pursuit" while saying you're dating implies a mutual attraction that's more certain. When a guy says he's courting a girl, he's trying to sweep her off her feet. He likes her, she doesn't necessarily feel the same just yet. I often hear girls refer to guys courting them and when they like the boy it turns into "I'm dating such-and-such."
Welund Posted November 28, 2004 Posted November 28, 2004 Yes, well, Dictionary.com sayeth for 'court'-- To try to gain the love or affections of, especially to seek to marry. Dating is going out to the movies and whatever else. Not confusing at all! Not to mention 'court' is not a word used very often any longer.
