Ever notice that there are some people who smell nice, but it doesn't really "spark" anything for you? Like there's no attraction or special feeling, even though you know that this person smells nice.

But then there are people who all they do is walk past you and you catch a whiff of their scent and it's like the pit of your stomach dropped out from under you... it's intoxicating, it's attractive, you want that person.

Just laying here about to go to sleep and I suddenly was reminded of that smell. The scent of the guy I have a crush on. It's soft and subtle, but when he stands near me my brain goes fuzzy.

He stood close to me today and I have no idea what he was saying to me. Something about small vacuum cleaners I think... all I knew was his smell. I nodded and smiled like I'd heard what he said, and quickly left the room.

God... what IS it... what is it about that, that drives me mad?

Usually works the other way for me. I fall in love with a guy, and all of a sudden his scent is the only one that even appeals to me.

Sounds like it happened that way around for you too, really. I mean, you already had a crush on him, yeah? When you're crushing hard, everything about the person is intoxicating.

It was sort of like... even though I hadn't mentally accepted that I had a crush on him, he would come near me and I'd smell him, and my stomach would start flip flopping around. That's what made me realize that I had a crush on him. I had been denying it mentally for weeks...

God, if he wouldn't stand so bloody close to me when he's talking -.- making poor lil phoe get butterflies. stupid man!

I just want to imagine the guy that Phoe has a crush on.

I mean, what kind of a specimen must he be??

The puzzle (that being, of course, how Phoe can find herself here and single)... and the pieces (the dude in question being God's gift to women)... absolutely must fit together suitably, or I will be let-down about society as a whole.

It would be OK if half the male crowd here saw the guy as a schmuck (for reasons of envy) - but if he's really a schmuck then it's just (a let-down - perhaps one akin to society letting itself down).

:D

I was talking with someone about small vacuum cleaners today too! For my car, just ordered this thing before going to work Amazon.com: Metropolitan Vac 'N' Blo Compact Vacuum: Home Improvement . It is going to be so cool cleaning my car with it! Anyway, there were no women near me and the person I was talking with was a big husky guy (like maybe 280lbs!!), so hopefully that wasn't you!....his eyes were kinda glazed over

I dunno about pheromones and if it's even affected by washing and using cologne, but I just go for trying to smell "shower fresh" all the time. Irish Spring body wash and Green Irish Tweed (barely even one sprit) is very good for that.

dude. try to get a hold of yourself

Phoe, I'm like Elswyth...I mean I might think a guy smells good in general but it won't do anything for me unless I'm already into him. I mean my bf smells objectively good, but it only gets me goin cause I'm smitten with him in general.

We are conditioned to find attractive the smell of someone who has an immune system radically different from our own [in the small details obviously].

This means that any possible offspring will have an increased chance of survival, and less overall medical problems.

So ... your body wants you to have babies with him.

Unless he uses some other stuff to mask the smell [like perfume], in which case you have a thing for that perfume and nevermind what i wrote above.

I don't think he wears anything, the only artificial scent I pick up would just be a light soap or laundry detergent. Otherwise it's just him...

My body definitely wants babies with him haha. He was alone with me in a garage the other day and was standing on the other side of a car, and I was putting some stuff away.... I was so overcome with this desire to peek around the car and look at him, see if he was looking around the corner too. And I suddenly had this thought wash over me of him pushing me up against the vehicle and his lips smashing against mine and I immediately had to leave the garage and busy myself with some mundane task to keep my mind from turning to mush.

Alternately, I have a good guy friend who's pheremones absolutely turn me off. And funny thing is that he likes to joke about how disgusted the idea of having sex with me is. As if his penis would shrivel up and fall off. I'm pretty sure my vagina would sprout teeth if he came near me with his penis lol. We are just chemically SO incompatible... and it's not that he smells 'bad', it's just not appealing to me. Other women are just animalistically drawn to him though.

He's cute in a quirky and nerdy sort of way.

He's about 3 inches taller than me, he's skinny and bald, quite pale, crooked nose and dimpled cheeks... when he smiles his eyes get crinkly and they sparkle. He's a doll... he's kind and polite, but quick witted and humorous. He has little inside jokes with me that make me feel important... he makes me feel appreciated just for existing.

Okay didn't need the "vagina sprouting teeth" visual but I get what you mean.

Smell is my strongest sense so it's big for a woman to smell good to me.

But as some have said, attraction that's already there makes me want to dive in.

If I'm sitting next to a smelly girl on the train who I don't find attractive, then she's just some smelly girl.

If it's a girl I know and am attracted to and I meet her as soon as she finished her yoga class, I'm like "we need to go home so I can give you a tongue shower."

I have been told quite a few times that I smell good. Believe it or not it's usually when I'm not wearing cologne. I mean some of my cologne is bad ass and chicks dig it but really, smelling fresh and soapy is what's worked for me.

All you have to do is put dryer sheets in your t-shirt drawer and you're good to go.

Yeah, ditto. Plenty of guys whom other women seem crazy over, don't do anything for me. Plus they smell bad to me. ;)

Still not sure which is the chicken and which the egg, though...

That's funny now that I think of it. Almost two years ago when I transferred to my current school there was this girl who I found attractive and we hit it off early on. She was cool. We had good chemistry. But I remember sitting in class one day and she sat next to me and I just remembered saying to myself "this chick smells bad."

Not a dirty or offensive bad. She was clean as far as I can tell. It was just *bad*, like her skin. Her natural smell, just turned me off.

But I figured I could work through that because we got along well.

We never materialized into anything. Not even so much as a kiss. We eventually had a falling out.

I wonder if that day in class was my nose telling me to stay away from her.

It was a battle between my dick and my nose. My nose was right all along.

Never doubt your body. It gives you signals for everything

u wanna hear smth totally funny? Smell is one of the most important sense when it comes to having us, as human, sexually aroused. Basically, some scientists have run a crazy study showing that by smell, you are able to identify / or as you put it "your body created that vacuum into your brain" / those individuals with fundamentally different DNA from yours - a sort of subconscious way of your body saying greaaat baby making material to your brain.

Scent, huh?

I also agree that the scent is what I call "the final blow" that makes me fall for a guy. I must already find him attractive, his scent acting as "boy, if I ever get my hands on you..." factor :o

Why are you not dating him ?

PS: On a side note Phoe, i have to say that i appreciate your thread.

The other day there was a girl in the bus who had quite a similar reaction to me, which shocked the hell out of me [because few do ... as i'm 60 pounds overweight after this summer].

I think i'll save the bookmark to your post for 'motivation' for weightloss when i finally get to hit the gym in a month or so.

He's not interested, he's probably taken, he works with me, he's ten years older than me.... he probably just thinks of me as the silly little kid at work.

it'll never happen, but that doesn't stop my attraction towards him. I'll just never act on it is all.

I notice perfumes, not pheromones. I dont stand that close.

Then there are 70+ years old people who smell... urine, no relatives to wash them (not homeless), you get the idea.

They are called phermones

According to thousands of web sites which promise sexual conquests if you buy their pills, human pheromones exist - bear in mind that their aim is to get you to buy their products. However, most proper well-controlled scientific studies have failed to show any compelling evidence.

What Are Pheromones? Do Humans Have Pheromones?

Maybe part of it is because you already like him?

What you said reminds me of looks. There are men who look good, I can see they look good physically, but I have no actual attraction towards them, no feeling whatsoever, no urge to jump their bones or anything, it's like a painting. Then there are other men, who may not even look as good, but SOMETHING about them ignites me and I have the same feeling you describe. :o

A man smelling good though will take him a far way with me lol.

Many years ago, a friend of many years started flirting with me after my divorce. He's an intelligent, witty and amazing person. We went on a date, and then it was time for THE kiss, and... then I got a whiff of his skin. I was completely repulsed by his scent, to the point where I turned the kiss into a small peck and pulled away. All I said was, "I can't do this. I think we need to just be friends." And that was the end of that. I never told him about my repulsion.

Many years later, I was listening to Canada's version of NPR (CBC), and a scientist was being interviewed about pheromones. Similar to Radu's statement, he said that if we are attracted to someone, but repulsed by their scent, there may be some common DNA going on. It's nature's way of warning you away from someone who may be related to you. Both my friend and I have Austrian backgrounds, so... who knows.

That had never happened to me before, nor has it happened since.
