I started roughly 2 months ago,

I've taken a lot on board and learnt a lot, they expect a lot of me, especially in such a short amount of time,

I've always taken on every task and tried to complete it as fast and properly as I could,

I arrive early and finish late and work through my lunch break every day.

I'm trying really hard. But every once in a while ive made minor mistakes which to me, is to be expected when im new.. they run a print of my work for the day and then the woman above me marks it.

I answered the phone today and it was a guy applying for my position, which I found a bit strange.

So when I got home, I went on line, and found my boss had uploaded my job title, my hours, and my salary online today.

But nobody has discussed anything with me.

Im presuming since i'm still on my 3 month probation and it's Friday tomorrow that I will more than likely be fired tomorrow.

I feel really mad. Because my boss has been really nice to me all day.

I don't know what to do ?

Did it occur to you that perhaps they're just looking for a *second* person to add, instead of replace you?

Be optimistic!

there's no room in the office for another person.. also there isn't really enough work for another person and I feel like she's been disappointed in me.

I don't know what to do ?

Freshen up your resume and start looking immediately.

There probably is nothing you can do as most employment these days is considered "at will" which means you could be dismissed at any time with almost any reason.

Condolences...

I would confront my employer immediately - get in before they do. Email the relevant person now and request to speak to them in the morning.

If you feel as though you have been doing well, and have received no feedback to indicate otherwise, then I'd be pretty pissed off too.

It is incredibly unprofessional and just lacking in common courtesy that they would have candidates call through on the line that you answer.

Voice all of your concerns to them, make it clear that you feel as though you've been doing well, and that this came as a surprise to you. They will generally agree with you, and give you some silly "but...," and this is when you should ask them for a good reference to help you gain further employment.

There will always be roadblocks ahead, but don't let it get you down - how we respond to setbacks in life really makes a huge difference in future success.

Good luck.

I can understand your frustration. I actually remember finding jobs listed at my company on craigslist. However, one of the positions I knew about because the current person in that position was leaving and another one was my position, but I knew at that time they were looking for a second person. Funny thing is, that person didn't last long...stopped showing up to work and eventually called to say they found other work. Ever since, my boss never made an effort to fill that position. I agree with others, talk to your boss and address any concerns immediately. Know where you stand and where you can improve or if there is still room for improvement.

That's because jobs are a joke and you're unfortunately learning a sad fact that will haunt you, me and most others in this "new economy". Disposable labor, part time labor, no or little benefits, they require tons of degrees and experience and they don't even give you the courtesy of letting you down easy.

You're a number to them. A disposable number. You could sneeze wrong once and they'll fire you for it. Legally.

I just gave notice the other day and saw my position advertised almost immediately. I couldn't care less as I am starting a much better job. I'm surprised my boss is even replacing me considering the amount of work my position entails can be spread to the other two people.

in our company $3B consumer products company... our HR is probably the dumbest department we have. they'll hire someone and then leave the posting up for months. doesn't mean anything other than HR is dumb.

So did calgary get fired?

I recently saw a job posting for what sounded like my co-worker's job. I asked her if she was quitting and she said no. It turned out to be for the identical position in another division of the corporation. Tragedy averted!

Basically my boss came up to me a few weeks later and told me they were looking for somebody with more experience, but they'll keep me on until I find another job.

It's really weird, because i'm still working, i'm still getting paid the same amount, doing the same job, only they've employed a new woman, who is now sat at my desk doing my job, only they keep getting me to carry on.

I don't know what's going on, it's really weird. Usually if you get fired, don't you just get fired there and then ? But i'm still here and my replacement is also here. I don't understand. But at the same time, i'm on really good money. My co-worker told me that he was talking to my boss about it on Thursday and she basically told him that there will always be a job at this company for me, but he told me not to take his word for it. He doesn't want me blaming him if she gets rid of me .

Im so confused. I have been there longer than my 3 month trail now, I need to ask for time off in November but I daren't incase she just lets me go. It's so weird. It's not even a weird working environment, everybody seems to be really lovely and nice to me. I don't think they're getting on with this new woman very well so far.

IMO they are waiting for you to either quit or mess up so they can fire you, since you were doing the job they hired you for if they canned you now you would get unemployment compensation. just a guess though and you are right.. don't believe they would always have a job for you.. when it comes down to the bottom line people make those cuts even if the company is doing great and can afford it.

What is you daily job like today if they hired someone to do you job or what do you do with your time ?

They might be waiting for something to open up or maybe they do have an idea what they are going to do with you but haven't implemented it yet but generally companies don't run that way.

I don't know what the laws in Canada are but in the US if you were in a protected class of people by race, religion, handicap, sex, you could potentially sue the employer and win. Maybe she wants you to leave on your own. I'd say stay and do better than the coworker. You may wind up with the job because you've had to time to learn to do it properly. Good luck!

P.S. Still job hunt. You might find something better.

Are they having you train your replacement? - and how is she doing at your orig position?

Optimistically, maybe they're grooming you for a supervisor.

I'm not really sure, the woman who was training me, doesn't really get on with the new woman at all.

But they all seem to like me a lot on a personal level.

The thing is, is that they still have me doing my job, the job the new woman is supposed to be doing, so I don't understand. Why replace me, but keep me on, doing the job that the new woman is supposed to be doing ? Especially if the reason they're letting me go is because i'm not capable of the position .

They have reduced my hours down. I'm just going to keep turning up for work until they ask me not to turn up anymore. I've never known anything like it.

Hopefully I can get back to full time.

Keep looking for another job on-line and with employment agencies, etc.

The fact that they are reducing your hours and allowing you to know they may have hired your replacement seems to perhaps say they are looking for the right replacement while trying to discourage you - so you will leave on your own and then they wouldn't have to pay unemployment?

Calgary, unfortunately this is the reality of the job world. A great boss (that is, a boss that is more than just a manager) is a dime a dozen. If you ever find one, you should do everything you can to stick with her.

Don't be optimistic about this. Your suspicions are most likely correct. To ignore them would only make the wound sting more. Based on my professional experience, your boss has been nice to you because you are a stand-in. Your job is available and she will hire the very next best option to replace you. The reason she is being nice now is because if you knew, then you might quit, or worse than that, the corporate sin: Perform at less than optimal output at all times. (Which is actually natural since we are not machines)

Most likely someone is putting an unrealistic demand on your boss for whatever goods you are expected to produce.

"It's nothing personal."

This is the good ol' mantra of the corporate world (and more is dictated by corporation that what should be). It's not supposed to be personal.

But it is to you.

Not everyone gives a **** when their boss is about to outsource them.

But you do.

That is actually good that you care enough to take this personally. I am glad that you do. More people should. If you are giving your best at this place you work and it is not enough for them, then you are wasting your time. Sure, it might pay the bills now. But if today, your best isn't enough then what will happen when tomorrow, the demand increases? If your best isn't enough for them then why are you wasting tomorrow and the next day working for them?

I would just quit. At your best, you can't do for them. But someone out there needs your best. So go work for them.
