This guy and I have been friends a year, we've really liked e/o, but we just started making out the past 2 weeks. He's going to his country soon, for about a year, and he doesn't want either of us to get hurt. he says that he would die to ask me to be his girlfriend, and I would die if he asked me! haha. he wants me to go visit him in his country, but he wants to go there alone, and be 'free' to work on his farm & see his family that he hasn't seen in forever. I am just SO happy that he finally made a move.. I respect that he wants to be free.. He even said that he is NOT going there to meet somebody else, or to go out every night.

Theres just one thing that I don't get... ever since I've known him, he would bring up his ex every now and then.. talk about what they used to do together, or what she used to say to him, he would always bring her up as if they still existed. But he also told me about her and why he broke up with her... They were supposedly planning to get married but she was a nag and made him miserable. Her personality was blah and lazy and bitchy and he wasn't into that. Now I just found out that they broke up about 3 years ago.... Does this mean that he is not over her? I understand that she broke his heart (Even though he broke up with her) but its been years! She has another boyfriend now, and they don't even talk anymore. He tells me that he doesn't care to talk to her, but he is close with her mom and cooks for her sometimes.. (he is a chef) And then she will text him and complain that he didn't make "her" favorite food..

Anyhow.. it just doesn't seem normal to me that it has been years and I still have to hear about this girl every now and then. I wouldn't say that it hurts me, but I can't help but feel like he may be comparing me to her when we are together... Would it be appropriate to ask him if he still loves her??? Or.. any other suggestions on what to say? If anything at all?
