Hey guys,

I play drums.

I've been playing for about 14 years now. I play rock and I play pretty hard.

My problem is: I have the bad habit of always slamming my right-hand Knuckle(index finger)

On the Rim of my floor tom, the big drum just to the right of me. You can guarantee

that almost every show i play, i'll hit it, or i'll bust it open where it's bleeding. I have scars

on my knuckles from doing this. But it's always my index fingers where the stick is gripped.

I just tend to slam the drums really hard and keep my drums kinda high for easy reach. I'm working

on bettering my technique to avoid this but, after all these years.....

My Question is: My Index finger is now looking slightly crooked. I just busted it open last Saturday night

And although the cut has healed, It is still very painful. WHY DOES THE PAIN LAST SO LONG? Am I doing

any real permanent damage to my finger, ya think? Why would soft tissues pain so long? Tried looking

it up on the Web, but found nothing like my situation....any thoughts?

Go to a doctor. I would imagine that continually cutting & banging any part of your body will eventually result in permanent damage.

Why don't you tape up the finger when you play?

Trip to the doctors is what is needed, none of us are really qualified to say whats up with your finger.

Can't you wear fingerless gloves or something? I have a few pairs that I use for various activies going to the gym and I wear a pear to work since I have bad circulation and typing 6 hours a day on a keyboard doesn't really help that.

They'd at least provide some protection when your whacking those drums.

See an orthopaedic doctor.
