MrTurk Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm in my early 40's. And I dont know if its just me....or maybe other guys feel the same.... But I seem to be totally clueless at determining the age of women in person....when they are in their 30's to early 40's. Now I know some are rather obvious. But theres been so many that are far younger than I thought, and many far older than I thought. Is this common....or do many of you have trouble gauging the general age of the opposite sex?
iKING Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 The safe answer: She's always at least 10 years younger than you think she is. (If she looks 28+ I mean. That almost took a really weird turn, saved it though.). 2
fortyninethousand322 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Yeah I never know either. Most of the time women are older than I assume.
HoneyBadgerDontCare Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Generally, if you look at a girl and think "Damn, she's hot!", she's probably ages 18-22.

Then there was someone on this forum who said I looked 40 -_- 2
Els Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I've pretty much realized that it's useless to even guess, especially with women. Really, IMO how old someone looks is more dependent on their choice of clothes and makeup than how old they really are - within reason, of course (maybe plus and minus 5 years or so). I get the opposite problem, people always guess too young for me. It's not cute either, when I'm friggin' mid-late twenties and I ALWAYS get stopped at bars for ID check, even though the drinking age here is 18! It's so annoying that I try to dress older just to look my age, but it doesn't seem to help all that much. I've decided that people are just rubbish in general at guessing age, especially of Asian women. 1
Radu Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 At first glance, i can't determine it. If i look carefully at her though, i am pretty accurate, but the latter takes more time. As far as etiquette is concerned, the problem is saying an age that is far higher than woman's age. So for instance if she is 25, but you say 30, that's not going to be too good, but you can still save it by saying you suspected an older age because of 'maturity'. On the other hand, if she's early 30's and you guess 40's, that's not salvageable. The key is to be a bit conservative, and to let yourself an escape with your guess, that can easily be turned into a good compliment. Even if you mess up, mess up with style.
KathyM Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I think it's really hard to tell the age of people. People generally age very differently, based on genetics, self care, habits, sun damage, etc., and the way they dress and style themselves can be very misleading. I was still being carded when I was in my 30s. People are pretty much surprised when I tell them my real age. I've stayed fit, don't smoke or do heavy drinking, don't spend a lot of time in the sun, dress stylish and not matronly, and was blessed with good genetics, so most people confuse me for 10+ years younger than I am. People often confuse me for being my husband's daughter instead of his wife and give me dirty looks when I go places with one of my sons, as if I'm their cougar rather than their mother. 1

Then there was someone on this forum who said I looked 40 -_- One of my co-workers is one of those women that looks stupidly young for her age, she's early 40s and her boyfriend is the exact same age as me, super early 20s. You look significantly younger than she does, I really have no idea how someone came up with 40. I've pretty much realized that it's useless to even guess, especially with women. But yeah it is pretty much useless, unless you do it for a living (doctor let's say), your guess is probably going to be wrong. I can usually put it within 5 years, but that's about it. Totally understand being quoted too young, when I was actually really young I didn't get carded for a damn thing. Now I get carded for absolutely everything. Casinos are the worst, every waitress that walks by me has to stop me to card me. Bars/casinos I just leave my ID out. 1

Els Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 Oh yes must be so horrible to look youthful. It really is! I swear it's cute for a while, but then it gets really, really old (pun not intended ). The worst part is in regards to career. People just don't seem to trust suspiciously young-looking professionals. Totally understand being quoted too young, when I was actually really young I didn't get carded for a damn thing. Now I get carded for absolutely everything. Casinos are the worst, every waitress that walks by me has to stop me to card me. Bars/casinos I just leave my ID out. Is that really you?? You look totally different.. That's true, i've had problems guessing the ages of asian men too. Rofl, it's not just you! The bf (same race as me) has had patients demand to see his qualifications, because they don't believe that he could possibly be old enough to have graduated med school... 2

People I work with prior to seeing me: Wow, which college did you get your business degree from? (Actual assumptions, I don't have a degree) People after seeing me: Haha, is this a joke? The tricky part is getting employees to do what you tell them to while looking like this. I had to hire someone that my employees would take more seriously just so sh*t gets done. Oh and yeah that's me at age like 16 or 17, something like that. 1
Emilia Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I'm 41 and I was asked my age last year in the supermarket when I was buying alcohol 2
miss_jaclynrae Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 I have always been mistaken for older, course, I come off older than I am in person. I could see how it is difficult to gauge age, age never really actually mattered to me, so I never played the guessing game.
