Princekilljoy Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 Hey everyone, I'm Trey. I live in California normally but have been in France for almost three months now. I return home in September. I realize that this may not be the best place to post this inquiry, but I thought I'd try anyway. I've done a lot of research on the subject of moving from America to Europe (mainly France), and my desire does not stem from hating America, etc. I'm mainly making this post with the thought that not everyone's experience is the same, so maybe I can learn something I haven't learned already. I'm looking to move from America to France and I'm not entirely sure how to make that possible. I don't speak fluent French as of yet, so a work visa isn't an option and neither is a long stay visa because I don't have the 5k that is required of that. So far, the only thing I can think of is a student visa... But I'm not really sure it works on online colleges. Basically, has anyone managed to move to France in a different way? Any advise, tips? Anything maybe I don't know? Thank you very much!

I found the French to be hostile towards Americans. I never could understand why, since the U.S. liberated the French near the end of World War II. So your three months in France may dispel my 1970's experience entirely.
miss_jaclynrae Posted August 10, 2013 Posted August 10, 2013 My boyfriend got his student visa through a university program here in the states. It is nearly impossible to get one to France. Just a heads up. It took my man a year of planning as well as working through his school program to make it happen.

It's been a while since you've been, I'm not sure if hostile is the term I'd use but I do find that everyone here is very ...rude. But then, I find that to be true basically everywhere I go. People are just dicks. The only reason I'm looking to move here is because my partner is French and is going to school here and long distance is hard on us.

Probably would be easier for her to get a student visa to study in America. Have you considered that? Best, TMichaels
Faith13/2 Posted August 15, 2013 Posted August 15, 2013 (edited) Seeings how you mentioned "your partner" the only thing I can honestly think of would be something along the lines of getting a "fiance visa," but that would mean marrying within 6 months time. I'm assuming that you both may not be ready for a commitment like that, but it's the first thing that comes to mind for me. I realize that, that too may seem costly, but it's really the price you have to pay. Not sure if your SO is a french national or what the situation is, but if they are it's the most accurate thing I can come up with. Absolutely not influencing you to get married for a visa though. I first attempted to get a student visa for myself to move to the UK and found that to be extremely hard without already having certain qualifications. Good Luck with making your LDR work, I know it can be quite a struggle. Also to emphasize on the french not liking americans, my SO lives in London, UK and I can say from experience that yes americans aren't exactly loved by other countries. Reason not being that they are "rude" let's face it, this country(USA) has made a name for itself. Just so happens that some of us "civilians" must endure the reaction that our government and so on has portrayed us as. Some people may not agree, but it's a matter of opinion.
