pink_sugar Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I had an interview the Saturday before last and the hiring manager seemed to really like me. It was one of the most positive interviews I have had ever before. She asked me which Saturday was a good time to meet the company president, this past or this coming. HR manager said she would have the lady who did my phone interview let me know which Saturday would be best for the company president. I hadn't heard from them by Thursday, so I called the lady who did my phone interview and told her what the HR manager told me. She knew nothing about it and since the HR manager was out of the office Thursday and Friday, she'd send her an email about the status. It's Monday now and still haven't heard anything. Suggestions or thoughts? I want to know what is going on, but not be annoying or desperate.
eleve82 Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I don't see any harm following up - just make it polite and very positive - round it up by saying you are looking forward to hearing back and meeting the president. Generally I've never had any problems being proactive and enthusiastic during interviews and its always better to get in for an interview earlier than other candidates

I was tentatively supposed to have an interview with the company president either this past Saturday or the one before. The one who has been contacting me is the initial interviewer who has been responsible for setting the interview times. I got told all last week that the HR manager was supposed to confirm with the CEO for an interview this Saturday. On Friday, she said her manager was going to call me to confirm the details. This is the second week I've had to deal with this and no call. I think I am just going to continue moving forward with my prospects. I don't really appreciate the promises and then no confirmation at the last minute. I'm not driving an hour away without a time and place confirmed. If not interested or they are taking their time to fill the position, just tell me so no one else's time is wasted. It sounds like they are just being flaky though and have no consideration for other's time. Not sure if I'd have to deal with that if I really got hired by them.
clia Posted August 6, 2013 Posted August 6, 2013 In my opinion, you shouldn't jump to negative conclusions so quickly. It hasn't been that long, and the company president is likely extremely busy. If you've never been involved in interviewing and hiring, it's easy to feel like you are being brushed off, when in fact he/she may have eight other things to do and fires to put out that come above scheduling an interview with you. Honestly, when you are really busy a week can fly by before you know it. I have no idea what type of company it is, but he/she may have been called out of town or gotten caught up in other things over the weekend. In my opinion, you should certainly continue to pursue other prospects, but don't write this one off yet. When they call, just set up the interview and see how it goes.

She said she'd have the person who did my phone interview confirm with me. I waited until that Thursday to give them a call and see if Saturday was still a go. The HR person was out of town and the person who did my phone interview said she'd email her about it since she hadn't heard anything. I waited until last week's Monday/Tuesday (I forget which it was) to follow up again after not hearing from them and ask if she had heard anything from the HR rep. I was told the HR rep was confirming this past Saturday with CEO on last Wednesday. By Friday, I emailed the initial interviewer to confirm the details for Saturday. She called me and said the HR manager was supposed to call me that day. I waited until late that night and emailed the initial interviewer again saying that unfortunately I did not receive the call, so I'll be assuming the interview for Saturday is post-poned and to let me know another date and time. She hasn't gotten back to me yet. I'm not sure what to think. I really don't want to be made promises and post-poning plans for an interview that may not happen. This happened twice now. I'm not sure if I should email or call them again or just wait for them to contact me with a definite date, time and place.

You are completely right to not drive an hour away without a confirmed time or location. I wish I could say that this isn't the norm, but sadly it sometimes is. I think you've done your due diligence and should be continuing your job search. If this place contacts you and you're still interested, then go on the interview. If they don't contact you then consider your other prospects and move on. I think we all have to realize that *tentative plans* and *expect a call* type statements in the job hunt should be taken with a grain of salt. I don't think employers mean to be flaky or inconsistent, but sometimes they are and they forget they left us hanging in the balance. Yes things went well, they seemed to like you, and you could be one of their top candidates. That doesn't mean they're going to be the most organized, polite, or professional as the process continues. That also doesn't mean you should just put up with anything and everything, definitely factor your experiences into your decision making should you get to that stage. 1

Thanks for this~ I was definitely not going to drive an hour unconfirmed...unless I already had other arrangements in the city and happened to be convenient. But yeah, I have learned from experience to always continue job searches, even if a job seems really promising. I'll only stop a search when I am officially hired somewhere. I've known a few people who just wait on a company and end up regretting not continuing their search.

Email after business hours son that the person will get the email first thing in the morning or call when you know they are not in the office so they will get the voicemail. Definitely don't want a live arkward phone call
