The she-male thing may be his attempt at convincing himself he's turned on by women but as you mentioned; zeroing in on penis not breasts or feminine attributes. His defensive behavior sounds like he doesn't want to accept or confront the issue and I'm sure he wouldn't want it getting out to anyone socially and publicly that he is gay.
