rockstarmusician Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 I received this e-mail from an instructor today: "You missed another story/editorial meeting today. While the meetings may not seem exciting, they are vital in identifying story and editorial ideas that should produce good copy for the following issue. Apparently, you also didn't do your Features article because of a possible misunderstanding of the Trades photos. Reporters and editors need to be in good contact so there aren't any surprises and certainly not just before deadline. The editor wanted to run a story with those photos/graphics, especially after our graphics meeting last Thursday when she saw what the spread might look like. I also have you down for missing a Sports story assignment for the first issue. If it's a matter of scheduling/time management, we need to look into ways to avoid potential problems. You don't want to miss any more story assignments. Finally, there are your delivery sites. I gather you are paired with Carla but have troubles reaching the sites. If that's the case and you don't have a car etc, you should identify some sites that are accessible to you and that aren't getting papers from somebody else, and deliver to them. Maybe you can trade with someone. Everyone should be delivering, though. If you have been delivering, we need to clear up any confusion." I'm going to school and studying print journalism (if that clears some things up here). Ok, let me run through all this that's in the e-mail: - I didn't know that I had to attend the story/editorial meeting - I thought that was just for editors of the newspaper - I didn't do my features assignment because the guy never returned my call. How can that be a "possible misunderstanding"? Plus, the editor (a few days earlier) asked me if giving me that assignment was too much (because I have my plate full right now) and I didn't say anything back. - I didn't miss that sports story. I stood out in the freezing cold for 3 hours on a Sunday for it. I hate it when people say I didn't do something when I really did it. - The delivering papers is the pain in the butt for me because they gave me locations off campus and I don't drive yet, and there's no way I'm going to carry 5 pounds of newspapers to off-campus locations. I'd be more than happy to deliver them on campus. GRR! Sorry - but I just had to get rid of a lot of stress from that. I'd love to give him the classic retort...(aka: F*** you clown) but I'm sure that's not very "professional" of me. I'd like to do something though..cause this made me mad.

If you're going into journalism, you can't just sit around and wait for people to return your calls. You sometimes have to try them a bunch of times. And you should have actually answered truthfully when you were asked if you have too much work. - I didn't miss that sports story. I stood out in the freezing cold for 3 hours on a Sunday for it. I hate it when people say I didn't do something when I really did it. Just correct him. Do you have a copy? If so, give it to him. - The delivering papers is the pain in the butt for me because they gave me locations off campus and I don't drive yet, and there's no way I'm going to carry 5 pounds of newspapers to off-campus locations. rockstar Posted October 20, 2004 Posted October 20, 2004 I handed in my copy of that story. The meeting the I had missed I thought was for editors, and I'm not one of them. I used to be and that's why I used to attend them. But the thing is, I don't want to do this as a career. It's something that I'm just not interested in, you know?
