Emilia Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Do you care about humor at all? Yes. In my vocabulary 'humourless' is the biggest insult. It's not just about intelligence, it is also about a certain outlook. But then again I have Gallows humour so it's definitely an aquired taste and a lot of the time have to hide it and replace it with something more socially acceptable 2
AlexDP Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Have you ever dated someone who didn't have the same sense of humor as you? Were you able to make it work? Maybe I place more importance on sense of humor than most, but I still can't realistically see myself dating someone who's sense of humor differs from mine. I get borderline offended when I find out the kind of stuff a particular girl finds funny if it's something I personally find hacky or cheesy. I'm like "she watches that show? She thinks that's funny?" It's also brutal if I say something to a girl and she gives me the face and I have to say "...it was a joke" My girlfriend does not have the same sense of humor. My sense of humor is very much about postmodernism and persiflage anyway and often you have to have seen the movie, show or song I'm referring to. If it's not postmodern, it's absurd. She just watched less movies than I do, so she doesn't always get my jokes. She also doesn't like The Wire, whereas I think it is the greatest piece of television ever made. Does it ultimately matter? Well, if you're cruising the Pacific Coast Highway, driving the Icefields Parkway, are standing next to her watching across Monument Valley together or having sex with her in a sleazy San Francisco hotel, you realize that while humor is a lot, it is not always the end all be all. Which, funnily enough, is a realization that goes straight against our postmodern souls, MrCastle.
JustJana Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Matched humor is important. Many people think I'm funny, probably one of my better qualities. I have a quick wit & I am very sarcastic, yet I don't find any of the things you listed as funny to be even slightly amusing. Jackass makes me and mourn for common sense & I find Seinfeld tedious and contrived. So while I don't think you are wrong to like those things I probably wouldn't find your sense of humor funny & you likewise would be irritated at where I find amusement. (I'm laughing over the screw joke right now to tell you the truth!) It doesn't mean that neither of us has a good sense of humor, just that they are different and probably not a good fit.
AlexDP Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 That's interesting. I think Jackass is the only one of its kind that I find funny. I think people who try to emulate it in real life and do stupid slapstick things are hacky and corny, but Jackass to me is hilarious. But aside from that, I like stuff like Seinfeld, Curb Your Enthusiasm, That 70s Show, and comedians like Louis CK -- observational stuff, sarcasm, dark humor, and raunchy. I also love Kevin Smith stuff and stuff with Will Ferrell (Old School, Anchorman, Step Brothers), but hate anything by Judd Apatow not named 40 Year Old Virgin. It's weird. If a girl can make raunchy jokes, I like it, as long as it's not typical shock value "oh look at me, I'm a girl and I said the C word, I'm funny." I like girls who are actually witty and sarcastic. Sarcasm gets my loins burning. I love it. Witty and sarcastic? Yet you like the 40 Year Old Virgin?
RonaldS Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Music and humor....critical. I could be out with the hottest of all hot babes, but if during the conversation I discover she's a Taylor Swift fan and has every season of the George Lopez Show on DVD, I'm looking for the door*. (* unless its clearly evident that I will be getting laid that night) 1
shexy Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Sense of humor is very important to me in a SO.....and I do think you have to be somewhat on the same page for it to work. Not all people will think all the same movies are funny, or all the same jokes are funny, but there has to be a humor compatability, if that makes sense. For example, if someone has a raunchy sense of humor, they probably won't get along too well with someone with a Disney sense of humor. 1

I just can not can not can not go there.
Author MrCastle Posted July 5, 2013 Author Posted July 5, 2013 Witty and sarcastic? Yet you like the 40 Year Old Virgin? That would fall under the "raunch" umbrella I mentioned earlier. Not every single thing has to be sarcastic. And actually, most sarcasm comes from me and not so much what I watch.
Drseussgrrl Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I feel this way about music, too. If I'm dating a dude and I find out he really likes Nickleback or Creed or some other such garbage, it's a huge turnoff for me. I mean, I have my dad's entire vinyl collection with classics such as the White Album so he's gotta be able to hang. I agree also about TV shows. I think Daniel Tosh might be my favorite comedian but if I found out my date cracked up over Jeff Foxworthy I might have to call it quits. I don't like slapstick, "simple" humor. Just like sex, laughing releases lots of oxytocin - so it's natural that someone who can crack you the eff up immediately bonds you with them, friend or otherwise. 2
miss_jaclynrae Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 I could never date someone who didn't get my humor, I correlate humor with intelligence. So by those standards, we would both find each other to be idiots if we didn't share the same humor. Laughing is something I think is KEY in any relationship. I can't tell you how many fits of laughter my man causes me to have, but then again, have him use the same humor on my aunt and it goes right over her head. I dated a guy who thought movies like american pie and Joe Dirt were hilarious. That is awesome if you are 13, but from my perspective... it made him look like a big dummy! I myself tend to be pretty funny, I crack myself up all the time and I also think funny people know how to have more fun. I wouldn't even consider a guy if he wasn't funny. Prime example, the last boyfriend I had... extremely hot and treated me like a queen. Yet, he was SO boring, I couldn't wait to get away from him! 1
miss_jaclynrae Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Witty and sarcastic? Yet you like the 40 Year Old Virgin? Are you kidding me? The 40 year old virgin is one of the BEST comedies. It is extremely witty, and as raunchy as it is, it is done PERFECTLY. Get outta here with your nonsense! 2

KungFuJoe Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Steve Carell is neither witty or funny. His awkward schtick is beyond annoying. Steve Carell isn't the reason why that movie is funny, though I do like him a lot. It was more the script than anything else...and the other cast. All the other characters just made it GOLD. Especially Romany Malco (black dude). Seth Rogan, and Paul Rudd is just great as well. That feisty old Indian dude. Jane Lynch is also awesome in that movie and I REALLY REALLY REALLY liked Catherine Keener. I don't know why she hasn't done more stuff...she's a GREAT actress.

miss_jaclynrae Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 OMG. :lmao::lmao: How can you not find that funny!? It is hilarious! :lmao::lmao: "it feels like a bag of sand when you're touching it..."
tbf Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 You mean boobs don't feel like bags of sand? :/I've got it now, as to why it's not funny. The humour is too obvious and broad.
tbf Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 A couple examples of witty and funny. It's the historical dynamics between individuals and what's left unsaid that makes these funny.
miss_jaclynrae Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 A couple examples of witty and funny. It's the historical dynamics between individuals and what's left unsaid that makes these funny. All I needed to do was look at the names of the links and I already knew I would find it boring. As I said, proof why having the same humor is so important! 1
Divasu Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Have you ever dated someone who didn't have the same sense of humor as you? Yes Were you able to make it work? Yes, for several years. The guy was obsessed with Alf and on our 2nd or 3rd date, I found a poster of Alf in his back seat. That def threw me for a loop. 1
Divasu Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Oh I love it. Especially with Paul Rudd in it, he's hilarious. I like Frasier too, hilarioussssss.
HokeyReligions Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 Our shared weird sense of humor is what's kept us together for almost thirty years. For me its far more important than sex. I have aweird sense of humor. I scared my dentist the first time I had a dental mold done. I saw myself in the mirror and almost choked laughing at the ridiculousness of it all. I find dentistry ver funny. And I wish hubby could watch the mammogram! Its painful but hilarious. I don't like comics who must swear all the time. Bill Cosby is a riot and he's clean. Though we did see Ron White at aclub some years ago and he's funny. I like some raunchy humor too and know a few good dirty jokes myself. Sex is funny too. Finding someone who shares my twisted view of the world is priceless. I dated guys who were just polar opposite from me. We both laughed at what the other thought was the wrong time. Political correctness is not necessarily part of my humor archives.
HokeyReligions Posted July 5, 2013 Posted July 5, 2013 (and I'd find it incredibly creepy to sleep with my clone). Now that made me laugh! Instant visuals of some people I know - in bed - chasing his/their wing-wangs in a circle around the bed!
