D-Lish
BUMP! OK, my first question is actually kind of embarrassing. I've been choosing the colors of my potential purchases based on my personal color analysis "season". Who the heck gave you that advice? Seasons?? That's how old ladies choose their outfits according to an antiquated 80's fad... lol. I've spent my entire life in the fashion industry and I'll give you the best advice you'll ever hear for dressing yourself. Go to a mall, look at the mannequins in the window- pick out a style you like- then go into the store and ask the associate to help you put the look together. That's what the mannies are there for, to draw you in and give you a no brainer idea of how to put an outfit together. How old are you? Just so I get an idea of what sort of stores to go to?
New User
Well, I'm a gonna' stick with my orange Crocs, black socks, Bermuda shorts, and plaid shirt. The classics never go outta' style.
Els
Owh, geez, Danny, I just remembered that I have yet to answer your latest PM. So sorry about that. I will say that you really seem to be overanalyzing it though! I mean, I'm a girl and I don't give anywhere near that much thought to what I'll wear. Do you enjoy it, or are you doing it because you think it's necessary? If the former, great, go right ahead! If the latter, well, most guys I know don't put nearly that much thought into it, and many of them have girlfriends.
KathyM
I don't care too much about men's shoes. I don't really notice them unless they're super ugly. I would suggest looking at men's fashion magazines to see what is stylish for your age group. You could also look at recent pictures of celebrities that have a similar coloring and build than you, and see what they are wearing. They often have stylists that are really great at what they do. BeholdtheMan
I'm a 6'4" (1.93 m) weigh 203 lbs (92 kg), have light brown hair, pale skin, and blue eyes if any of that affects how you think I should dress. Are you athletic now? Do you have some muscle on you? If so, just dress in fitted clothes, not like super-tight...but clothes that accentuate your body, rather than baggy clothes that hide it Fitted vs. Non-fitted
Radu
Man, i know that 2nd guy is fitted, but he looks like he can pop a stitch at any time ....
Author DannyMason
I can't give fashion advice to someone I haven't seen, as people need to dress for their body type, personality and in styles that fit them. I could PM you a pic if you'd like. I know what I like when I see it. I could PM you some potential purchases if you wanted to help. So my suggestion is, find a female friend or relative you trust and whom you think would have a good sense of fashion and ask them to take you shopping. You don't even have to purchase anything, but just to try various clothing styles. You can also go to a men's clothing store, tell a sale's lady you're looking to upgrade your style after weightloss, and I'm sure she will be happy to help you try on a bunch of stuff and give you the "female opinion" on them. I don't have any female friends or relatives in the local area. And I'm not sure a sales lady at a men's clothing store would exactly be an objective opinion, I mean, she is being paid to sell the store's stuff...
Author DannyMason
Who the heck gave you that advice? Seasons?? That's how old ladies choose their outfits according to an antiquated 80's fad... lol. Pretty much every Google search along the lines of "how do I pick which colors look best on me?" turned up a lot of that stuff, but if we wanna be specific of who it was that actually convinced me, it was TBF. In defense of the idea of seasons, every time I've ever been complimented about a color I was wearing it was part of my season, and every time someone said I look bad in a color it was a color not in my season, so my life experience is pretty consistent with the idea. I've spent my entire life in the fashion industry and I'll give you the best advice you'll ever hear for dressing yourself. Never heard of "seasons" either, but it just sounds like wear these colors more if your skin complexion is X and not so much putting an outfit together. I know for me, brown and green works very well, with the added benefit that most guys around me don't really wear those colors.

No I don't really enjoy it, I'm just doing it to improve my odds in the dating world (and dressing well is a good life skill to have anyway). But it seems like every time I settle on an approach someone suggests something completely different so I stay in freak out mode wondering if I'm on the wrong track.
skydiveaddict
=DannyMason;5017608Shack, I've brought those questions to you. The big one: How should a man dress to be the kind of guy you'd like to go out with? . Just tell her to wear to jeans and a t shirt cause she's gonna be jumping out of an air plane. AFterwards you can all dressed up have dinner and drinks. all the while she'll be asking you when " we can do it again."

It was me and I'm younger than you! Colour, tone and shade matter. He has to start somewhere. Most people are clueless what colours suit them or that there's a difference in tone and shade. People will say, I look good in red but realistically 90% of reds look like ass on them.
thefooloftheyear
What if you are a cop or work for UPS? Just be a man, Danny....Its OK to look nice, but dont get too "metro"...Ive been hit on in my gym junk with a backwards ball cap and a sweaty t shirt.(shrug)... BTW, question for the ladies...Do women actually like that hairstyle that has the little "flip up" in the front? Man, No way.. that just doesnt do it for me... TFY

Screams desperation and is very metro. The only thing I hated more was when so many men were trying to recreate George Clooney's old haircut. I like a man who looks like a man. Neat but not trying too hard.
Red Wolverine
Depends on the occasion. Jeans and a T-shirt is always good with me for casual. Don't wear those sparkly, bedazzled jeans so many men are wearing now. They belong on 12 year girls and even then I don't like them. Make sure they fit and don't have holes. Don't wear loafers and definitely pass on socks with sandals. Nooooo!!!! Nice dress shirts and slacks but skip the flashy stuff. A nice suit is always a bonus for dressy occasions. I'm a sucker for a man in a suit, especially if he has the shoulders and arms to carry it off. The key is to look like you took some pride in what you're wearing without looking uncomfortable or like you tried too hard.

But it seems like every time I settle on an approach someone suggests something completely different so I stay in freak out mode wondering if I'm on the wrong track. I think one thing I've learnt from learning about fashion (trust me, women's fashion is even worse if you're not naturally inclined towards it, because it's more complex! ) is that everyone has different opinions. There are some things that are absolutely awful and most people will agree with that, and there are some styles that are relatively 'safe', but for the most part, you aren't going to get one consolidated opinion on what looks best on you. I personally think that making lists and going over them repeatedly is going a wee bit overboard, and probably not the best use of time. Why don't you just grab a friend, pop into a store, and see what they think? You probably won't get things right the first time or even the fifth, but eventually you'll develop a sense of what you like and what works for you, much better than trying to get the Ten Commandments online.

sweetkiwi
Dude. Danny. Stfu. You DO have fashion sense. I've seen shirts and sunglasses you've picked out. Good stuff. No matter how you dress you'll appeal to certain women. Just be clean, confident, and your funny charming self. If clothes help then awesome. But you need to think you're sexy. And (risking sh.it talk), 6'4" and 200+ lbs is pretty damn impressive visually in my book. Plus blue eyes and nice skin (regardless of color) is sexy too. It's true I look at a man's shoes. And yeah I gather info based on his shoes. I could be wrong, I could be right. But it's interesting to say the least. If a guy wears hiking boots with mud caked soles I'll assume he hikes. If he wears Rainbow sandals I'll assume he surfs or is from California. We all gather visual cues from others. Say something with your style. I am kinda a punkrock-hippie who looks awesome in "come-fhuck-me" heels and a cocktail dress. Depending on the occasion of course. But I keep elements of my own personal style as it's impossible for me to completely hide who I am behind clothes. And thank bob because I don't want hide. I want to celebrate my uniqueness. As should you sweetheart.
mario_C
Great stuff. Also, I read Esquire and GQ, they're both online. Ladies, is that a good guide?
Man-guy
My personal advice? Watch the episodes of Project Runway where they do guys outfits. Once you do that, watch the rest. I actually helped dress my ex-wife b/c she was so damn wild and quirky all the time with her outfits that I had to basically teach her how to dress professionally. All I had to do was learn what a good fit was for me and stick with it. I SERIOUSLY recommend Express men's slacks, once you find your perfect fit, they have tons of colors for both formal and casual wear. Color sense is MUCH harder, I suggest having 2-3 colors that will pair up together, and if you're feeling flashy, add something bright or neon to it. Since being single, I've gotten TONS of compliments on my styling now that I got the time, and I can wear all my clothes to work or to a club and still be totally appropriate. To me, versatile clothing is important to keep my wardrobe down, it just takes some thought. "Make" an outfit you'd like to wear and buy it. Then buy another with similar colors and BOOM, 3-4 outfits. You'd be amazed how quickly you can work your small wardrobe. Also, good shoes. I recently got some more that matched my outfits MUCH better, and it has made a very noticeable difference. To quote Tim Gunn, "Clothing is rhetoric." Think about what you want to convey to someone when they lay their eyes on you. Confidence, artistry, professionalism, intellectualism, rocker, lawyer, doctor, whatever. Once you got the message you want to send, the rest is easy. Edited August 30, 2013 by Man-guy
