FitChick Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I think collectors can be strange and even a bit obsessive, no matter what it is they collect. Stamps, bugs or otherwise. Men who collect comic books are the strangest of all.
SuperGeek Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 What about a guy that collects lots of frogs in the basement? I used to date a girl that divorced a guy with lots of frogs in their basement... thousands of them. Really creeped her out Men who collect comic books are the strangest of all.
hppr Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 haha @ landmines. The weirdest collector I ever knew was a woman who had a house full of stuffed animals. Every room had a couple dozen in it, including this really big purple dragon thing that sat in her ex-husband's easy chair that was named Ralph. 1
hppr Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 haha @ landmines. Yeah stepping on the cat when you're stumbling around at 4am is bad enough. 1
shexy Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I don't know....I probably wouldn't because most likely someone that into guns is also a conservative. I won't date an uber conservative. And if he hunted with any weapons, I'd definitely pass on that one - I'm a vegetarian and can't even imagine being with someone that gets off on killing animals.
HokeyReligions Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Its an expensive collection. If I could afford it I would collect too and be at the shooting range every weekend. For me 8 - 10 guns is enough tho I would like an AK. My brother is a collector although where we have some great military pieces from the 1860's to around 1912 he has mostly current guns. It all depends on your likes and comfort level. IMHO if anyone you are dating has a hobby or passion that you don't share its not a good match.
Lani Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 In short- no, I would not date someone with a weapon collection. As someone who has had their life threatened with a weapon, I just don't want anything like that anywhere near me. BUT, that's personal preference. If it makes you uncomfortable, then maybe tell him so. But if you're ok with it, but are thinking that public viewing of it is an issue, then really think about it. Don't let society rule who you should and shouldn't date. I'm Australian, and I do find it strange that someone would collect such items here. But I also know many country folk who own weapons that they are very proud of. At the end of the day, it should matter what you think and want here, not anyone else.
Eclypse Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Of it's antiques that might be ok. I personally thought about getting an old flintlock pistol, since I'm a huge history buff and that would be pretty cool to have. But if he has assault rifles and land mines... Then no.
ChessPieceFace Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 which is the rest of the world population outside the US so you are in the minority So you base your personal ethics and morality on that of a majority vote. How noble. In fact that is quite literally fallacy. And you'd tell a victim that they had no right to defend their home and family and life against an intruder, based on this "majority ethic", no doubt backed up with whitewashed statistics to defend an argument which is inherently anti-freedom. Again, how noble. Police can't be everywhere. Every individual has the right to defend his or herself. I don't need to ask the permission of a majority to know what is both ethically and logically correct. Thankfully the founders of our country didn't either. If you want to continue a gun debate not involving the OP, take it elsewhere. I presented this side for the OP (mishy) to demonstrate a material counterargument to their anti-gun position because this materially affects their choice with regard to the "gun nut" in question. In short - guns aren't inherently bad, the guy isn't inherently bad for owning and liking guns, and if she can understand this, she can make a more informed and rational choice as to a course of action regarding her beloved "gun nut."
gaius Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 It's usually the guys who don't own guns that go on a rampage. They run out and buy them just for the occasion. So you should be fine. And to answer your question yes I would date someone with a weapons collection.
StanMusial Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 My buddy collects guitars. I remember years ago his gf seriously bitched him out for buying a particularly expensive axe. Several girls we knew were sporting fresh rocks on their fingers and he was spending money on guitars... oh the humanity! Now, he keeps a couple of them at my place... what wifey doesn't know won't hurt her!
