There are more guns in your country that you realize...

15% of Australians have registered weapons

Just saying....

I bet they live on farms....

The OP was quite specific about the urban environment

If you don't like his hobby then just don't date him, simple.

If he raced rail dragsters and you didn't like the danger aspect of it then you have every right, people don't date cops because of the waiting and wondering side but keep the judgments of his hobby to yourself.

People are calling him a lunatic and disturbed and you are even going there.

What has he done besides have an unusual hobby to deserve to be judged in such a harsh manner, instead of a hobbyist you are thinking he will kill people.

I don't think it's being judgmental about a strange "hobby" - it's THAT hobby.

Having a fascination with weapons is having a fascination with power, pain and death. I mean, landmines??? What does someone get out of looking at or owning one of these? All it invokes in me is a deep sadness for how cruel man can be to each other.

I like boys with hobbies like tree-climbing, instruments etc. I wouldn't judge anyone who liked model trains or collected little jars of sand from beaches around the world or someone who had something a little weird like a collection of hair locks from ex girlfriends even...

but i will judge someone who collects animal heads they have hunted or weapons or taxidermy animals. I'll judge them as someone i don't have aligning values with and keep my distance.

Let me preface this by saying I don't particularly like guns.

However... my fiance has a gun license, owns several rifles (yes, the so-called "assault" rifles), a number of handguns and enough ammo to survive a zombie apocalypse.

Everything follows current laws and regulations and he keeps it tightly locked in a large safe.

The first time I was at his place and he showed me his guns, it made me slightly uncomfortable. I honestly questioned why someone would need all those weapons. Over time, watching his behavior, I realized he's just a collector. He wouldn't shoot them anywhere but at the range, and even though he had two gun club memberships, he would only go shoot occasionally.

In this context, it's no different than any other collecting hobby. I like collecting cookbooks... even though I rarely read them. He likes collecting guns, even though he rarely uses them.

To me, the deal-breaker would have been if he had seemed obsessed with weapons in general. Like, if it had been something he spent a huge amount of money on, talked about constantly, and seemed to be a centerpiece in his life. Since he seemed otherwise well-rounded, it didn't seem to matter much.

As always, your mileage may vary... but do consider the full picture before making any judgments :)

i found it somewhere else as being 5%

having said that, a lot of farmers have them which might skew it a bit

We have shootings here in this country, but the mindset about guns is generally different to say the US

I have had gun and knife collectors in my family. To me they are different kind of person. It gets to be odd after a couple weapons. My uncle seemed always to wish for something to happen that would give him an excuse to fire. He was perfectly nice and harmless, but his eyes sparkled when he brought out his weapons. No collector I've known can get through a conversation about guns without some sort of reference to using them on people, jokingly or seriously, sometimes menacingly.

My parents got into conceal-carry permits and self defense. Suddenly they started going to gun shows and their little arsenal started growing. One time we went to lunch and my step-dad showed up armed. For me that was over the line.

Aside from the lethality, I think collectors can be strange and even a bit obsessive, no matter what it is they collect. Stamps, bugs or otherwise.

I think girls by and large are scared of guns. Chances are he's just a normal dude with an interest in military gear. There are stranger things to collect. I'd be more worried if he was some weirdo from OLD though.

I'd date a girl who collected weapons .

I'm not really into guns like that - if I felt I needed one or two though I would get one. I doubt I will need one, as well as hope I don't :p. I have held and shot a few.

This thread makes me happy that I'm dating a European woman who likes and shoots guns.

yeah, i know what you mean

he keeps them at home, and this is what he has

world wars 1 and 2 rifles , vietnam guns, other guns

grenades , landmines , ammunition, shooting and hand gun and Collectors

licenses

this is a worry isnt it

Ughhh are these operable? Meaning, do they still work?

If so, I dunno about Australia, but here in the States that is really illegal.

Is he a history buff?

I am a big World War Two buff and collect uniforms, medals, Helmets and hats(that is probably the one thing i collect the most of, I don't know why), and coins. Yet, the only weapons I have are two World War One era rifles from my Great Grandfather who fought in the war, and a civil war era shot gun and a civil war era rifle (American Civil war was early 1860s) from my great x whatever grandfather. None work and all are kept in the back of my closet. One day I want to restore them.

The only reason I do not own any guns that work, is because A. I can't afford it. B. My fiance even though is a hill billy by deffention, hates guns!

If I do manage to convince her to let me get a gun I will probably just stick with world war one and two rifles and pistols. I don't care for the modern stuff. I personally don't see the need for an assault rifle either.

So, would I date a woman (if I were single) who had a massive gun collection. Depends. If she was like an anarchist or extremest, no way in hell... don't want to lose my job or date a psycho. Now, if she was just a gun buff, then yes I would.

If it makes YOU uncomfortable, then you should not date him. I personally will not allow guns in my house at all, so it wouldn't make sense to pursue a relationship with someone who collects them (unless he was willing to give up the collection, I guess?)

Ask that again when someone is breaking into your house.

I'm not going to shoot someone who is breaking into my house. I'm just not.

Actually, they're quite legal to own in the U.S. depending on state and if you've paid the appropriate tax. Yes, in operating, working, explosive order.

I can only assume they're almost certainly inactive in Australia and just the metallic outside with nothing inside.

Sorry for the off-topicness, sorry mods!

And have the appropriate license? How many states allow this? I know here in VA we do not.

Given how restrictive the federal and state laws regarding firearms are in Australia *and* that he's apparently licensed in multiple categories of collecting *and* that he's disclosed, I'd not consider this a relevant issue to *dating*. Reading the OP, it appears this man has a passion for collecting historically significant weapons of war. Heck, in the US he could have a popular television show like a number of successful folks do, focusing completely on building, collecting and operating firearms. In Australia, he's an everyday guy with a hobby, appropriately licensed and, if my read of Australian firearms and explosive devices laws is correct, has a large number of inoperable devices of historical significance. Does he have a dog?

I asked the question because of many of my fellow collectors are animal lovers, both for hunting and domestic purposes, and those animals are like members of their families. How a person treats the living rates more scrutiny in my book than what they do with inanimate objects.

Of course. I just enjoy being fascetious too much, sorry

That actually brings up a great point. Sense of humor. OP, when you interact (in person) with this guy, challenge him a bit on the gun collecting thing and see how he handles it.

If he's a man of good character and you like him I don't see the problem. I mean it's not like he's some mafia hitman or drug dealer who keeps his arsenal in the basement he's just a nerd who lives in a museum.

Most guys do this to a certain extent, we put our 'guy toys' all over the damn place, then we start dating and getting laid and quickly figure out that we need a more presentable, homogenous house so the samurai swords, star wars figures, naked lady posters and singing bass fish clock all come down off the walls.

It`s weird to me, but I`m canadian. Anyone that owns anything other than a hunting rifle up here is out of the norm. Like hand guns, or assault rifles, what do you need that forÉ. are you going hunting for some geese with a hand gun

There was a guy who recently stabbed his wife to death. So don't date a chef either.

My ex, Skiman, was a gun collector, of sorts. I never understood the "need" to have more weapons than there are heads in your home... but, whatevs.
