mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I live in australia, and its a little different here to the USA, i know you have the right to bear arms, - here about 5% of the population have a gun license, (according to my research). I have met someone who i am very very attracted to. One problem, he collects guns, and all sorts of millitary stuff, has all sorts of gun licenses, and we live in a city. I know when i grew up in the country people used to shoot rabbits and stuff, but that was different My feeling is to just give this a very wide berth but damn it i am really attracted to this person. I mean with all the massacres in teh USA lately it just makes me wonder whether if this person just snapped one day, could something happen? How do you know if they are mentally ok to have weapons? should i just avoid this, and stop it now
aussietigerwolf Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I would say listen to that feeling... usually you have them for a reason. 1
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 yeah... its been creeping up on me you know what its like in our country, its not like you come across people like this very often and even though it is "collecting"... why do you need a gun license in the city? why do people need guns? damn it i really am interested in him, but this... 1
Emilia Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Hm, I'm not scared of weapons and have a shotgun licence myself but it's kept in the country for hunting. Have friends and ex in the armed forces but none of them have stuff at home. I've always found that a bit weird.
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 yeah, i know what you mean he keeps them at home, and this is what he has world wars 1 and 2 rifles , vietnam guns, other guns grenades , landmines , ammunition, shooting and hand gun and Collectors licenses this is a worry isnt it
Emilia Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 world wars 1 and 2 rifles , vietnam guns, other guns grenades , landmines , ammunition, shooting and hand gun and Collectors licenses this is a worry isnt it My former father-in-law collected antique guns not landmines. Yeah, the above is weird
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 My ex was an avid gun (we're American) and weapons collector and while at first it didn't bother me as even though I don't own a gun, I have no issue with those that do, it began to. The main problem I had was that he owned so damn many.. All kinds from assault weapons, riffles and handguns to machetes, hunting knives and even tactical gear. I mean, WHY? It just got too weird for me but my main issue was that he was insanely consumed with his next weapons purchase. He was always buying or searching for more. It just weirded me out way too much. He was from the south so I know that's the culture there but just...no. Alternatively, if your guy is into weapons from a pure collectors standpoint and isn't a paranoid, raving lunatic and you feel 100% secure (I cannot stress this enough) that you yourself aren't in any danger and nothing he has is illegal I don't see a problem. thats the thing, the buying and searching for more its like , are they waiting for world war 3? why are they stocking up? i dont know if he is a lunatic yet, its too early to tell so you broke up with your bf, was that ok? did he freak out and did you feel threatened or anything
BeholdtheMan Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 grenades , landminesYeah...kinda weird i dont know if he is a lunatic yet, its too early to tellMay I ask...why are you attracted to this man whom you suspect to be a lunatic? Is it just the handsome face and hot bod?
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Yeah...kinda weird May I ask...why are you attracted to this man whom you suspect to be a lunatic? Is it just the handsome face and hot bod? i dont know if he is a lunatic, seeing that people dont tend to show it until years later.. you know what i mean, people have that stuff building up in them i think im just going to avoid this
Million.to.1 Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Personally, I think any obsession with guns, weapons, or war is wack. Why do people want an object that is probably responsible for many deaths, injury and misery? Kinda sadistic. I'm from NZ, and the gun culture of america is crazy to me. When i was in Vietnam, i found it sick that tourists could pay to shoot guns at the chuchi tunnels. You could buy bullets and shoot real guns.. AK47's etc. In a place that has been ravaged by war. Where the vietamese lived for years in tunnels! Locals who probably lost family cashing in on tourists desire to fire a gun! It was weird and sick. Any obsession with war or weapons wigs me out. I have no understanding for why people want to own or are attracted to something that causes nothing but misery and fear. This guy might be hot Mishy, but I think you are seeing a side of him that goes against your moral compass and you should listen to that. If he likes guns, then he would like to use one. The fantasy the power that holding a gun creates, the power to take life. 1
sillyanswer Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 world wars 1 and 2 rifles , vietnam guns, other guns grenades , landmines , ammunition, shooting and hand gun and Collectors licenses this is a worry isnt it I hope the landmines and grenades have been deactivated! Seriously... I think there's a difference between collecting deactivated historical firearms and collecting working guns (and both are different from keeping a small number of weapons for their main purpose, if legal and licensed etc). 1
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Well it sounds to me like he's collecting actual collectors items that are relatively normal (aside from the landmines ) as opposed to building his own personal arsenal so I wouldn't worry too much. As far as my ex goes, it was very very delicate and required a bit of decent acting on my part. I always tell people it was more of an extraction than a breakup. I ended things in December but we kept in contact until early February-ish. I danced around the weapons issue and placed the blame largely on myself than anything and did it via Skype (he was out of town visiting his gun-loving father). It was probably better it happened that way. He was more despondent than angry or violent over it and begged to remain friends which I did to a point. He never directly threatened me but he did say some rather cryptic things and once he started making vague hints at suicide in an attempt to grab my attention I ended our tentative post-breakup "friendship" and cut ties altogether. He has neither contacted me nor (as far as I know) made any attempts to contact me nor shown up at my house. sounds like you were very clever in getting away safely , glad for you
RedRobin Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Any obsession with war or weapons wigs me out. I have no understanding for why people want to own or are attracted to something that causes nothing but misery and fear. Same here. I avoid those who enjoy watching gratuitously violent movies or playing gruesome video games as well. 1

Art_Critic Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 If you don't like his hobby then just don't date him, simple. If he raced rail dragsters and you didn't like the danger aspect of it then you have every right, people don't date cops because of the waiting and wondering side but keep the judgments of his hobby to yourself. People are calling him a lunatic and disturbed and you are even going there. What has he done besides have an unusual hobby to deserve to be judged in such a harsh manner, instead of a hobbyist you are thinking he will kill people. 3

No i was just saying that i dont know him well enough to know what is underneath it all. when i started this thread i wasnt sure how i felt about it all. But now after hearing from ppl here i just know that i am not comfortable with someone who has an interest like this, because potentially it *could* put myself at risk I dont know if he is a lunatic, the point is, i dont want to find out. I have ignored general red flags before with men, and i really promised myself not to do that again. This is a pretty big red flag. Its a hobby and a lifestyle, and potentially i would have to live with it in my house
Emilia Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 What has he done besides have an unusual hobby to deserve to be judged in such a harsh manner, instead of a hobbyist you are thinking he will kill people. Outside the US in most Western countries it is extremely unusual to have a weapon collection at home, especially a small arsenal like this guy. 1

You are missing my point, to go from being a hobbyist to a killer is quite the reach He seems like a hobbyist not a killer
Emilia Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 You are missing my point, to go from being a hobbyist to a killer is quite the reach He seems like a hobbyist not a killer My point is that we can't tell the difference because we don't have the experience. You do. For us it's frightening. And he knows this
Author mishy Posted June 18, 2013 Author Posted June 18, 2013 Outside the US in most Western countries it is extremely unusual to have a weapon collection at home, especially a small arsenal like this guy. yes, this is Australia, i have never met anyone who has a gun collection, i would have thought only museums could collect things like grenades. Its just different here, the average person wouldnt have a gun in their house. 1

Its a hobby and a lifestyle, and potentially i would have to live with it in my house There is nothing wrong with listening to flags a waving as that is part of finding someone who fits you rather then causes drama or discourse in your life. and...I get it, like I said there are many people out there that can't live with being a cops wife or whatever and they have every right and you have every right to not date him because of his hobby but to call him a potential killer is a bit much. IMO
ChessPieceFace Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 why do people need guns? Ask that again when someone is breaking into your house. ... That said, I'd only want one locked away for home defense. I wouldn't be 100% comfortable with someone's obsession or fascination with guns either. My friend tried getting me to go to the gun range a bunch of times and I refused, and didn't want him bringing his gun into my house. I don't even like being near armed police officers. But rather than demonize someone for their hobby, why not just look at it like an incompatibility. I can't tell you whether it's one you can live with. But I wanted to oppose your general viewpoint. I view someone who sees NO need for guns as just as extreme as a gun nut.
Art_Critic Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 Its just different here, the average person wouldnt have a gun in their house. There are more guns in your country that you realize... 15% of Australians have registered weapons The rate of private gun ownership in Australia is 15 firearms per 100 people The estimated total number of guns held by civilians in Australia is 3,050,0001 to 3,500,0002 Guns in Australia: Facts, Figures and Firearm Law Just saying....
Emilia Posted June 18, 2013 Posted June 18, 2013 I view someone who sees NO need for guns as just as extreme as a gun nut. which is the rest of the world population outside the US so you are in the minority 2
