A little over a month ago a girl and I started talking. Things started pretty slow at first. We only went on a couple dates over the first couple of weeks or so we had met in person (we met online). However, over the course of the past week or so, things have started to get more serious and we see each other FAR more often. We've never talked about being exclusive, I think it's still a bit early for that, but I am truly hoping it goes in that direction.

Having said all that, her birthday is this weekend. Normally I have absolutely no problem thinking of a gift, but since it's so early on I'm at a loss. I know it should be "something thoughtful, but inexpensive." I get that. But I have no clue what. Does anybody have any suggestions?

At this early stage, a generic gift with just a slight personal touch would be fine. A past boyfriend once gave me inexpensive beaded earrings for my birthday (we had just started dating), but told me he chose them because they matched my eyes. That extra thought made it sweet without being too much. We were exclusive by that point, though, albeit barely.

Alternatively, you could offer to cook her dinner to celebrate; that would be sufficient this early on. Anything to show that you're thinking of her.

It depends on what she likes! I once bought a previous boyfriend a little cactus as he said he loved the one he had as a kid (nostalgia).

Another ex once bought me a poster of my favourite band and bought me the CDs (all ready had them) but I really loved the gesture.

This was all in the early stages of a relationship.

Little but thoughtful goes a long way!

Bake her favorite cake for her.

I don't know if it's just me, but I appreciate that as much as anything a woman could buy or do for me. Cook her dinner or take her out to eat and back home for dessert. It makes a person feel really appreciated.
