I am very concerned to make sure the Internet is safe for my kids - does anyone use the software suggested here? Any thoughts on this program? From what I have seen, i think it is great

The pose as kids and see if they can get men to engage in sexual talk, and then visit them! it's apparently very effective and helps the police get the guys.

They're most certainly perverting justice!

Sorry, ends justifying means or no, that's entrapment.

Quite Machiavellian of the police to do such things.

I checked the website out of curiosity.

I think it is

1) stupid

2)pointless

3)dangerous.

Let's suppose that a pedophile does not chat with his real picture in his profile. Only an *extremely stupid* pervert would put a real pic of himself online!

Guys from the perverted-justice website put the pictures of the 'pedophiles'on the net as well as their yahoo messenger screennames.

How would you feel if you had put your picture online, a perv had saved it to use it in *his* profile to hook up children, and you found out that your picture now appears on perverted-justice and *everybody in your area is now labelling you as a pedophile because of it?????*

I think it is great if guys who are in the police pose as children to catch pedophiles, but civilians should not act on their own. not in such a stoopid way.

And, as dyermaker said, that's entrapment.

This is a nasty thought, but I also would bet that a minority of people get aroused with posing as children. I knew a guy who did something like this, he posed as a 13 year old, when a pedophile tried to hook him up he either hacked in his computer (he is a pretty good hacker) and destroyed everything he could, or passed information to a website like perverted-justice, only a tad more serious.

At first I thought it was great, but when I realized that he considered it not a way to help others, but more...a hobby, and that he talked about it like some hunters talk about hunting, I started to find him creepy.

Are the people on the website really trying to help out children and worried parents, or are they doing it for themselves?

Civilians should stay away from this crap, IMO.

They did sound like they were getting a perverted kind of kick out of it, didn't they?

It's very strange.

But I guess if I was a parent I would feel differently about it.

The danger of this is that people are being arrested through their thoughts, and not their actions. We are turning into a society of mind policers. It's reminiscent of the 50's and the anti-communist wave that swept the US.

What do you charge someone with? There was no child involved, and no action against a child. There may have been intentions, but how can you prosecute people for their intentions?

It's wrong. It's paranoia.

The land of the free? Riiiiiiiight.

The link was removed, but I am a firm believer in parenting--not policing. I have all the security features on my computer to protect the computer

I trust my kids (12,10,7) and they so far have not let me down. Their instant messaging programs are set only to accept from buddys in the list--so they have to KNOW someone or TALK to someone to get on the list. They know not to click links that are unamiliar, and we all have some pretty heavy spam blocking on the computer.

They each have their own desktops (Windows XP) and the computer is in the family room. Periodically, I will look at history to double check and look over the email account and buddy list, but I have not found anythign to be concerned about. They know I do it and they also know why.

Yeah well in America many people are willing to selectively give up their rights on issues the deem its important to, not realizing the consequences of doing such. Put a speech together that uses the words safety, children, and freedom and you can get most americans to agree to anything.

I saw that episode of Dateline.

I agree, that's exactly what I thought while I was watching it.

I guess the people from Perverted Justice didn't think of that one.

I don't think what they're doing is right either. They are just average citizens, they aren't even law enforcement officers. I guess I could just start talking dirty to some guy, say I'm 14, invite him over and ruin his life, too. I agree that what the guys were doing was VERY wrong, but I still don't think those people had the right to do what they did.

On another note, if I didn't trust my child enough to believe that she/he wouldn't invite a stranger over to the house to have sex with, or talk dirty to old men/women (or other children for that matter), I definitely wouldn't be letting him/her use the Internet.
