Do I have the right to ask HR not to disclose any information about me to anyone who calls asking about me, especially for security reasons?

Posted

It depends on what state and what their rules and guidelines are. Generally though, most government organizations do not give out employee information because it is sensative material unless it is on a need-to-know basis. Then again, I only know that from one perspective and not your particular sate's perspective.

It depends on who is calling, why they are calling, if they have a subpoena, etc. and of course state and local laws.

Most companies do the basics, name, rank and serial number (so name, date of employment, and current status).

Who is potentially calling that you don't want any information disclosed?

^ This is true.

Also, if you are going for a clearance... they can call whom ever you want, and if it pertains to the clearance, there is nothing you can do about it. Trust me.

So whatever it is you don't want someone finding out about? I've always found that being honest about it first, before someone/company finds out you've been with holding that information from them, is honestly the best policy. It shows you are an honest person and own up to your mistakes.

good luck!
