VitC Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Created a free profile 6 years ago on a dating site. Never did anything with it. Then last week got a email from a female across the country. Profile looked good, she is attractive and gleamed that we have some things in common for her profile. The email said: "hey there, i have been on here for a while and i havent met anyone yet. please reply if you are real, wouldnt mind getting to know you." Ok, possible so I decide to pay for membership ( knowing it could just be a membership "baitor" ). Sent email back ( short and sweet )...was 5 days did not hear anything back. No biggie, just sent another short email and within a few hours got this back: "well, hello John. Okay, i am sorry but i am not on here most times but i wouldnt mind if we chaat sometime soon. you can reach me Text: 917-300-****. so we can set up a time to chat and share photos. Nice to hear back from you" OK, this just screams scam now - all my red flags went up. Phone number not in area where she says she is located in her profile. Also, researching on google the 917-300 exchange is used mostly for questionable uses. My gut says drop it like a rock and run. Thoughts? Thanks! 1
sillyanswer Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 My gut says drop it like a rock and run. Thoughts? Thanks! Yes. If that's not a regular landling / cellphone number for your/her area then it's probably a number that costs loads to call which makes it sound like a scam to get money for the owner of the number. Based on what you've said, if it was me I might even report the profile to the site.

todreaminblue Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I just want things to be real, straight up, devoid of deceit......makes me a little sad that it isnt.....what i hate more than anything....is it is the lonely souls that are targeted...reaching out to someone, anyone, and they are merely dollar signs.......i have put on my profile pen pals.......i like writing to people in different countries ......and a guy or girl or conglomerate attempted to scam me......dating sites that charge membership and use fake others as bait......i am a bit disillusioned with dating sites....what i feel bad about ....is the photo that i sent to a fake...i am not sending photos to anyone anymore.....they can see me in person...deb

Author VitC Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 This has been posted before.... under a different user name of course. Are you accusing me of being someone else? This is the first time here. I wanted some feedback, that is all. Who is this deb?
dreamsgone Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 the best trick i have learned is if you can get a pic of the persons profile upload it to google image search, if it is posted anywhere on the net that google can find then it will, if its a scam she should have several sites with her pic under different names. Google Images just click the camera button to upload a pic or paste the image's url, let google magic do the rest 1
Author VitC Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Yes, thanks - I did that with no results. I will just ignore her and see if she messages me back at later time. Just don't like it.
fortyninethousand322 Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Well probably a scam. Paid dating sites are notorious for this. I was talking to a girl from a dating site (a free one though) who listed her location as very near mine but in reality she told me later she was in another country. Sounded really fishy to me, but then again she knew specific things about the area (like certain roads, traffic patterns, where things were) and there really is a person with her name and photos. Even so, she always came up with an excuse when I asked to talk via webcam. So who knows. Online dating has a lot of weird people sometimes...
Estate Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I have some experience with this... I'll write you a detailed guide to getting this girl when I get home. Unfortunately I can't write it now, I'm in intense negotiations with a Negerian Prince.
CarrieT Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 In you are on OLD and within a message or two, they want to take it an email or texting, 90% of the time it is a scam.
lamaga Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 I think it is a scam. What you could do is email 'her' back on the OLD-website and ask if she is a scam artist. Most likely you wont get a reply, is what I think. Or you could just let it be... Honestly, even if 'she' was real, the things she wrote sound very dull and not really like an interesting person. Good luck. 1
FitChick Posted May 8, 2013 Posted May 8, 2013 Google Images just click the camera button to upload a pic or paste the image's url, let google magic do the rest I tried that but got different error type messages. Do you mean copy and paste the URL from the dating profile page?
Author VitC Posted May 8, 2013 Author Posted May 8, 2013 Thanks everyone for the feedback. Makes me feel better. Just going to leave it alone.
