FitChick Posted May 5, 2013 Posted May 5, 2013 See if there is a local ikebana class you could take. You don't have to be that artistic. A lot of it is analytical -- angles, spacing, proportion. In my class of about a dozen, there are only three men (one is a gay florist). The other two men have taken the class before and are learning more advanced techniques. One is a retired doctor who said his wife is a painter and now that he was retired he wanted a creative outlet. The women are mostly Asian (Chinese, Korean, Japanese). After you do your arrangement, you are encouraged to walk around to the other students to see their efforts. Perfect opportunity to get to know people slowly over several weeks. Ask a woman where she buys her flowers and then you could "accidentally" bump into her there and ask her if she has time to go for coffee or sushi. You could also go to a local farmers market and strike up a conversation with a woman who is buying flowers, "I am taking/just took an ikebana class and want to practice at home." She might find it fascinating.
Author FitChick Posted May 6, 2013 Author Posted May 6, 2013 Do a Facebook search for Ikebana. You will see the people in many classes across the country. Mostly women with one or a few men.
