So I went to the gym today and arrived just after this girl (she was getting out of her car as I pulled into the space next to her's). Anyway, I'm doing what I came there for (legs, light ab work) and she gets off the treadmill and goes to all the places in the gym that I'm in. If I was on the leg extension machine, she was one machine over, if I was doing abs, she was in the mirror right next to the incline thing looking at herself in the mirror. Went on for about a half to a third of my time there.

After I was done, she got on one of the stationary bikes. I waited a couple minutes and said "oh why not" and got on a bike two bikes down. Did about ten minutes and left. I thought she stole a few looks at me but I don't know for sure. As I'm in the car I see her leave the gym and get into someone else's car (not the one she arrived in) which I assume was her boyfriend, but I don't know for sure who it was, man or woman.

My normal self says it was just coincidence, nobody follows someone around the gym for 45 minutes. But how do you tell? And what would have been a good response on my part?

But how do you tell?

By telepathy. Or, you can't.

And what would have been a good response on my part?

"Hello"

Obviously you can never know for sure. But I guess my question is would someone normally follow another person around the gym?

"Hello"

I've never said hello to someone in the gym before (man or woman). I'm there to work out, they are there to work out. It's not social hour.

But, if I were to say hello, what would be the appropriate time and place to do so?

If she's really following you it won't be the wrong time whenever you say it.

I actually asked a girl that once (not at the gym but on a college campus). Everywhere I went that day she was there, randomly. Computer lab, outside on the picnic benches, out walking to our cars.

She got very uptight and defensive, even though I had a smile on my face and I tried to make it clear I was kidding around.

Maybe I need to work on my delivery...

Well if it was Monday and you were doing chest exercises, then it'd be nothing more than the fact that Monday is International Chest Day...but I would just call this one a coincidence and call it a day.

However, I think this will be a great springboard to at least say hello to her and start a conversation next to you see her at the gym. She obviously will feel more comfortable with you since you're not really a stranger to her anymore, but someone she sees a lot at the gym. Gradual buildup of rapport is very important, especially at the gym.

It sometimes happens out of sheer coincidence...but I know exactly the order of what I'm going to do when I'm at the gym, so I don't really know what runs through the mind of someone who's just random going from exercise to exercise. Perhaps it's possible to follow someone around...

Yes it is. At least for me is it...

Anytime. If you pass by her, just say hi. The more often she sees you, the more apt she'll be to stop and have a short conversation.

Some may disagree, but I think during her workout is the best time, not when she's leaving...

Yeah I guess that's possible. Though I've never observed someone doing two different kinds of cardio in the same day. It seemed like she was just wandering the gym for no purpose other than to follow me around. I mean as soon as I was done with legs, she was done, even though I started first.

Not sure when/if I'll see her there again. I only go there because my brother works there and I get in for free. When he's not there I either work out at a different gym or at my house. So we'll see I guess.

Hey, it's worth a shot, if nothing else, just a change of scenery as far as the gym goes...I think the gym is a great place a build a social network, but the gym really is social hour for me...

LOL Bros know Monday is the day most girls are at gym, so they have to do bicep curls in the squat rack and bench press with affliction shirt and chalk.

OP, I've had that happen too. It's probably coincidence. But making a joke like sillyanswer said "we seem to have same routine" would be a good approach. :)

dont tie your life up with "i bet this will............." you end up posting questions about stuff that happened a week earlier to find an answer to something your never know.

wait, you did that already!

And going down only 1/4 of the way so they can bench press 135 like it's 135...?
