CARL45 Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 I've been reading a lot about being a dominant man. One thing that I keep hearing about is voice projection. That men who are dominant project their voices and are not timid about coming off too loud. One thing I notice about using my voice when talking to women on trains and buses is the fact that many women will speak with a lower voice almost making them impossible to hear. I've had this happen twice and I find this interesting. Has anyone else noticed this?
Author CARL45 Posted May 3, 2013 Author Posted May 3, 2013 Wow really intelligent comment. I don't think I explained this well. I mine projecting your voice so that it is audible. I notice this when I'm talking to women on a bus or a train. I think your comment is funny because it shows just how little you know about communicating with people. If you do not make your voice clear then no one will be able to understand you. People often feel that they must act a certain way in certain places. This means that normally people are going out of their way not to be noticed which is basically unattractive to women. More importantly its selfish because your not concerned about disturbing other people no your more concerned about looking bad in front of other people.
USMCHokie Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 No. Loudness has nothing to do with dominance. And OP's point is not focused exclusively on loudness; rather projection of voice. It'd be interesting to see if there were any studies ever done on the acoustics of voice projection. I know of a number of people who can focus their voice into a relatively small "cone" so that people in front of them can hear well while those to the side don't necessarily hear as loudly; while others project in omni-directionally. Articulation and breath control are pretty important to vocal communication.

That men who are dominant project their voices and are not timid about coming off too loud. Voice projection is something that we are actually taught... And it's not necessarily about loudness, but about confidence in what we are saying, i.e., we know we are right, whether we are actually right or not. Have you ever noticed when someone is answering a question and isn't sure of the answer, he will tend to trail off the end of statements and murmur the words rather than articulate them clearly? This reflects doubt in the speaker and almost a fear...he doesn't want others to know exactly what he's saying... To take myself as an example, when walking around the base out here, I will verbally greet everyone I pass by with a 'good morning' or a 'hey, how are you doing.' In the mornings when I'm still half asleep, I tend to greet them under my breath with very weak projection. As the day progresses, I project more strongly and enthusiastically, and there is definitely a significant difference in reactions I get from people. They seem more lively and cheerful and respond in kind. It just creates a better aura about you if you can project your voice clearly.
USMCHokie Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 Dominant man. Youtube blocked here. But as usual, you focus on extremes rather than look at the underlying principle, which is a good one here, especially for the guys. 1

tbf Posted May 3, 2013 Posted May 3, 2013 In this scene from Rome, there are two alphas and one beta. Guess which one's which. If blood and a decapitated head bother you, don't click.
