I ran into an old gf last night. She was at a local restaurant with her family. It has been close to 10 years since I last saw her. She looked like hell. She looked a deuce if she was a pound and had dyed her hair so blonde it was almost white. I was kind of embarrassed to talk to her but it was unavoidable because they were waiting for a table like we were. I didn't even recognize her until I heard someone say her name, and then I realized why she kept looking over at us.

This happens to me from time to time... I run into old gf's and flings and girls I used to run around with. They almost always look like sh*t, and are typically divorced with one or two kids. They say you can tell how a girl will age by looking at her mother but that is not always true. This girl last night, her mother is thin as a rail and reasonably attractive even in her 50's.

Has this happened to anyone else? Do you ever run into an ex and say, "Whew, I dodged a bullet on that one?"

I have said that (dodged a bullet) once or twice but never in regards to their appearance. To me, dodging a bullet means that I'm glad I didn't invest further, or ended investment, in someone who was/is unhealthy for myself. Of course, preoccupation with appearance, if that was a feature of their personality, could have been a bullet dodged, sure.

Like the previous poster said, it isn't physical appearance that gives me that "whew" feeling. But just about every person I've run into who I've been romantically involved with in the past seems to be doing worse off than they were before. It's unfortunate at times, since there are a few women that I really wanted the best for, whether or not it was with me. But still others, who may have done me "wrong" in the past... yeah, I admit, I get a little kick when I get to hear about how poorly they're doing :D

There was one particular girl I dated for a few months who got an unplanned pregnancy within months of her breaking it off with me. I definitely felt like I dodged that bullet; didn't know realize I was trapsing about on such a fertile playing field!

It's not just physical appearance... in many cases there is an ex-husband out there who got pulled through the wringer and has another decade or more of child support/spousal support to fork over. There but for the grace of God go I.....
