johndoe Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Has anyone ever gone on anti-depressants after a break-up and did they help?
loveregardless Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 medication should always be alast resort...yeah they work...but they will change a whole lot more than your depression, they chage your chemicals, they change you personality, they effect you sexually...the list goes on and on, not to mention the actual health related risks. If you are severely depressed to the point where you cannot function and this is your only alternative, then so be it, but if you have not tried to fix the situation in other ways, I suggest you do that first. Meditation, prayer, exercise, changing your routine, taking up new hobbies, reading, researching, changing your diet, you can also try seeing a therapist or psychologist without going on meds...there are so many aspects of a persons mental state of mind to take into consideration, and so many things that effect it... (p.s. i am bipolar and have been living without meds for more than a year now. depression is an awful thing, but it CAN be overcome)

If YOU USE it and do not let IT USE you. In other words, is there anyway you can take it whenever you need it? Maybe temporary for sleeping only? I do not take meds but had doctor friends prescribe "whatever" I needed temporarily 8 years ago during my horrible court battle and separation crap... Do whatever you need to do to be happy and get through all of the crap... Be wise.
netrie Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 Who broke up? WHY? When? How old are you? etc...

I did, my doctor prescribed it to me because I ended up with a very bad case of depression and all I was doing was crying all the time. The medications had rather unpleasant effects on me (among other things, I feel like they damaged permanently my ability to remember things and since I took the meds I have been needing two more hours of sleep a day) . I'm still glad I took them, but I am never going to take that stuff again in my life.

I never heard of such a thing as losing your memory and needing more sleep. But so happy they worked for you and I hope the main inquiry does not get discouraged by this either... Thanks for sharing!
tiki Posted September 17, 2004 Posted September 17, 2004 I think it's okay to have to take them based on certain necessities. Just remember this: *temporary* treatment. Some have to take it long term, but most just need a little help through the rough times.

It was just Prozac. I have no idea whether such a reaction to prozac is normal or its effects vary from person to person, I never got a chance to share information about this experience with anyone who took the same meds. I was on it for two months....which I basically spent hanging around like a zombie, sleeping 12 hours a day, and feeling dazed. I lost 10 pounds because I lost appetite 8actually, eating made me feel like puking). Any trace of sexual libido was gone. Funny thing is, given the situation I was in, it was a bliss. It was difficult to concentrate on anything..... I never felt like crying...I never felt upset....I had forgotten anything about that guy who dumped me and any other problem that had made me felt miserable all the time. It was like I didn't care about anything, only thing I wanted was to sleep. Re-thinking about it, it was **scary**. I always assumed that this is the normal effect of prozac, but I might be totally wrong. In my other post, I forgot to mention that being dumped by a guy was basically what triggered my state of depression, but not the only cause.
rogueless Posted September 18, 2004 Posted September 18, 2004 Weight loss, sleeping too much, and loss of memory are all signs of depression. It may be the illness and not the medication. Some antidepressants make you sleepy until your body adjusts.

As you said it could have or would have been worse off of the meds during that time... Depression is a pain in the ASS.
