Thinking of joining the military (female)...what is dating like while enlisted?

I'm contemplating going back to school for nursing and joining the military (to the dismay of my father), as it is something of which I've always taken a curiosity. However, I am 26, turning 27, and would like a family one day. Though the ratio gives me an advantage, this is is not by any means the reason why I would like to join. I am just curious as to what I should expect while enlisted, whether dating fellow military men, or dating civilians. Have any of you had any experiences with dating within the army while enlisted? Any thoughts I should consider while trying to balance my goals? Thanks!

Honestly, nobody? I'm not just looking for girls to respond, but guys too! Even if you've heard stories or experiences second hand! :)

You don't want to hear the stories I've heard....trust me on that....

Oh yes I do... Do tell me, please! I've heard bad ones too, but the better informed I am, the more I feel that I can avoid bad situations if I do end up enlisting.

I was in the navy, dated navy, married navy. I went in when I was 20 so I was young and crazy (partied ALOT). Had a joined when I was closer to 30, I would certainly steer clear of the younger, partying crowd.

My brother is army and the story is the same. Lots of dual enlisted and one enlisted member families. It's definitely do-able.

It's tough if your SO doesn't have a portable career where he can move every 2-3 years and still earn a reasonable income. Pay for the higher grades of enlisted are comparable to the level of officer pay at the lower grades. So you might be living hand-to-mouth early on in your career.

There will be some deployments where your partner can accompany you but there will be others where you cannot take your partner. I suspect this might have a lot to do with your MOS. For the latter, you could be gone for months at very short notice - call on Friday, leave on Monday kinda deal. So, essentially, if you have a family, your partner will be taking on a lot of the responsibility and the experience is not unlike that of being a single parent. And potentially, a lot of your relationship might be long distance.

Though the army provides quite a bit of support for spouses and families (I don't think there is much for GF/BF relationships), I've heard that the divorce rate for army personnel is much higher than the national average, though I don't have any figures to hand.

As an aside, it might be worth bearing in mind that the US military is downsizing both personnel and resources, so it might be very competitive to get in.

You will receive more male attention than you will know what to do with.

I've pretty much heard this from people I know in the military.

well you either join the military to serve your country or for the benefits

Or you don't

If you really love something and it's your passion, you shouldn't think about what will happen later.....who would date me and how can I manage

Just go for it, if it's truly what you want, not just some rebellious act to prove you are tough and not all white collar type!

Coz joining the military is not that easy...It's one of the hardest thing in the world....War, killing others is never easy; that is why you see many guys and girls who joined the military, now have tons of psychological issue ....

If you want to join go for it and go into it with an open mind. I made the choice to join the Air Force and I have no regrets.

Yes you will be consistently outnumbered by men so you better enjoy male company and attention. And you better rock that uniform.

I think you had already established yourself and your entourage before I came back from my hiatus.

Rather appealing. :p

But as far as the military goes, make sure you double wrap it. You will be overwhelmed by a variety of different guys out there...the ones that openly and blatantly want to get in your pants...the ones who becomes your bestie all in hopes of getting in your pants...and the hopeless ones who become your bestie who are too ugly to get into your pants...

A.) I'll try to overlook such a deficiency, just coz your face is so damn cute :p

B.) Most of us civilians tend to have them too. So helpful for getting from A-B

A couple women (marine and army) told me gangbangs are the norm. Serious. The male:female ratio + lots of pent up stress = XXX

The air force academy near Colorado Springs has a tarnished reputation. Don't think I need to go into details there.
