Why do some men and women come back after months or years?

I'm not saying they all do it, because some haven't in my case but the majority has. I never really understood why either. Either things didn't work between us, we broke up, or we just drifted apart as friends and then months to a few year later here they are again.

 

In the case of an ex boyfriend he just kept coming back because no one would date him/he couldn't find anyone. But the others i don't really know why unless they just missed me.

 

Another guy i've known since '05 as a friend we'll talk for months and hang out, then we'll drift apart. We always seem to follow each other through the internet though so we have a way of contact, but it just seems odd to me. I doubt it's fate that keeps pushing us together, but again we've drifted apart after talking for months again. Then, sometime later he'll probably be back.

 

So, either friend or someone you dated why would they leave and come back months or years later?
