I am looking for a job. There is a pretty good senior analyst job I was interviewed for a couple of times over a month ago but they went quiet on me so I assumed they filled the position. I did think it was a little insensitive of them not confirming this but hey, corporations are not your friend.

HR (who is a lovely lady by the way) got in touch yesterday, slightly embarrassed asking me whether I was available for a third interview with the Senior Exec this position would report to, the reason for the silence was apparently that he had been away in the US and Asia for the best part of the month. They want to interview me ASAP apparently.

I replied that I was still interested, gave them my availability but haven't heard back anything since. Considering they wanted an interview this week and it's been over 24 hours since we last had contact, I'd say it's bad form.

Would you say in cases like this past behaviour is likely to indicate future behaviour? Ie if they are this flaky, should I just assume that this is how they treat their employees in general?

I will definitely go to the 3rd interview by the way, just curious whether anyone can relate.

The correlation between relationships and employment are uncanny

Golden rule of interviewing: Your interviewing them too :)

I have learned to trust my instincts during an interview. It can be tempting to ignore them, but every time I ignored them I found out they were right when I took the job. I feel I am a valuable asset to an employer. I know my role, but at the same time I should be respected. You don't find a final word everyday :D If you feel disrespected already, I would be leery.

I do think there is a relationship with nonchalant attitude about hiring you and what you can expect on the job. Not necessary a bad thing, but it does give you an idea of how they operate. Basically, they've already set the tone that you're on their time table. If that is part of the job, than I think you can expect that a flexible availability (and probably routine inconvenience) will be required. But not everyone likes that type of role. Some people prefer regimented routine.

I agree, do the interview, but during the interview if you get a bad vibe I would listen. Another variable to consider though, is your current situation. If you do not have a job or are in a bad spot, you might take the job as a temporary solution even if you get a bad vibe.

I recently interviewed somewhere like that. The guy wanted to hire me at the first interview, before he could even figure out how to pay me! If you don't know how you're going to pay me, how can I accept the job? I definitely think it's bad form, especially since he beat around the bush when I emailed him saying I need to know how the bonus structure would work before beginning any work. Then he wanted to meet again to discuss it, after I was frank that I needed either an hourly or set pay for time spent on work, rather than purely bonuses. Either, yes you can do that or no, you can't. There isn't need for any additional meetings in which I would be wasting my time.

Thanks guys. I am employed currently but would love to leave as soon as I find something better. Well, would love to get out tomorrow but will wait until a good one turns up. I took this job in 2010 because I was desperate and don't want to be in that spot again - within reason.

Thanks again, pretty much along the lines of what I expected :) though I was hoping for something more positive deep down as it is a good job on paper
