jesicka30 Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 i had my son repeat preschool because he did not recognize the alphbet yet. he has a very outgoing personality and is very sociable with plenty of friends at school so when it was time for him to attend kingergarden i put him in public school when i took him the first day he cryed which i had not expected from him, so here we are second week of school and as i drive into the parking lot he starts bawling again and since this kind of behavior is usually not part of his personalty it realy bothers me that he so reluctant to go to school he says he wants to stay home with me. or bettter yet he says he hates this school wants to go to a new one. an other child even came up and ask my son to play but my son just kept his head down so after trying to get to explaian why hes so upset i ended up bringing him home (yes bad move) anyone have any solutions or ideas why my usally charming confident friendly 5 year old hass suddenly changed?
tiki Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 My son acted the same way, with church and school. You just gotta keep taking him, and trust that he'll conquer this. He can't be a kindergarten drop out.
Butchey Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 Sounds like normal anxiety to me. See if you can stay in class for a little while. Most teachers will accomodate you if you explain. If you are there and he can make friends while you are watching, you may find you can leave and he will be off and running. He just needs to get used to a new environment. Some people dive into the water and others wade in. Be patient.
Author jesicka30 Posted September 13, 2004 Author Posted September 13, 2004 what skills (education, social, physical) should an average kindergarder or 5 year old know
tiki Posted September 13, 2004 Posted September 13, 2004 My son just turned four. He knows his abc's (has for about a year) and can count probably to about 13 or so. He recognizes all shapes, colors and all basic items. I've used flash cards and he loves them. He can actually count items and does fairly well. At times he gets excited and counts way too high or way too low. *My son has also been in a preschool since a very early age. I used to perform kindergarten physicals on children aged late 4 to early 6. The only skill testing that I remember is that they had to name off things like rabbit, boat, circle, stuff like that. Check with your doctor if you're that concerned though. They can test his development or refer you to someone that can. Just keep in mind that a lot of kids develop at different paces.
