Major histocompatibility complex underpins our immune system, with MHC Class II being particularly important. You and Archgirl are referring to the same concept.

The idea that oral contraceptives interfere with "ideal" mate selection has been around for about thirty years. True, it gave women new freedom and choice. But like anything else it came with a number of downsides as well, including health risks to the woman herself.

I never heard of any of this before yesterday. I heard about the study on the radio whilst driving into work yesterday and looked up the article when I got to my office. I HAVE heard that bc pills cause women to gain weight. That would make them that more effective. LOL. Although, I suspect that is an excuse that women give to their husbands after they pack on 80 lbs.

I hesitate to comment before reading the actual study but...one study and a sample of 85 is not conclusive on its own. Although this does not mean that future research won't duplicate te findings.

But overly using genetics/biology/evolution to explain human behaviors just leads to overly simplistic conclusions that can be highly misleading.

Also, the media's interpretation of science tends to be vastly simplified and sensationalized, if not outright inaccurate. Science moves in baby steps, far too slow to supply the daily gabfest.

It's amazing we ever get sick considering all of the miracle foods, equipment, exercises, and breakthroughs; it's the Dr Ozification of science.

Weight gain can be managed and effectively addressed. Acne can be managed. Other health risks not so much. For example, a woman on birth control pills is at risk for developing blood clots that can then travel to the heart and/or lungs and become life-threatening, the risk being even higher if you're above a certain age. You're at higher risk for certain types of cancers. There's a long laundry list of health risks.

But it does give women an important choice with regards to their sexuality.
