A male acquaintance of mine made the mistake of meeting a woman he met on EH, at a desolate camp site. Turned out to be a total set up....he gets jumped by three guys and they take his watch and wallet at gunpoint. Just cuz we're men doesn't mean we are not vulnerable guys. Always meet at a public place, let someone you know where you are at, and be careful about how much personal info you give out to strangers. I know I am stating the obvious, but I just want all my fellow Loveshackers men and women to have fun but be safe and be cautious. Lots of bad people out there.....Any other tips i left out please post.

It could have been worse, a car pulled up at the site and the assailants got spooked and left, but they were not done withhim

WTF would anyone EVER meet up with someone from the internet at a desolate campsite?

COME ON.

It literally doesn't get any sketchier then that.

Maybe an abandoned warehouse? I don't even know.

He's kicking himself and feels awful about it.....the point is its easy to let your guard down when you meet someone you like even with OLD, especially us men.

I am familiar with the area....its a cozy spot, they were supposed to have a picnic I guess. Desolate is a little strong....its more out of the way on the outskirts of town..

At least he's safe now and didn't get injured.

Feel bad for the poor guy.

Thanks for giving everyone a heads up, that is crazy, and hopefully it'll prevent one or two people from making that mistake.

Just for reference people, meet in a public place! A coffee shop or something.

The guy could report this to police and maybe they can request the fake woman's IP location from the date site maybe. (don't know how big the offence has to be for this). I'd certainly push it if it was me.

This sort of thing can happen with not just online dating. Have not heard of any OLD incidents like this, but know of a couple of incidents with girls in clubs or on the streets suckering guys into promises of romance at the park or house nearby and getting jumped by guys. I've also heard guys getting set up where the biker bf walks in on his girl with her pickup (rube) and the guy paying over $ as compensation to prevent a beating from a furious bf. I have read stories of women online (sites like Ash***M****n) using honey trap on married men and black mailing them with photos from hidden camera.

This is a pretty big offense where i live, and i imagine, also in the US.

Using a gun, being more than 1 and premeditating it also increases the penalty [and i imagine there too].

Over here, they would each get at least 3yrs ... up to 15 [and that's not couting the bonus they get for the gun or if it was done late at night].

OP, your friend should go to the Police.

These idiots will end up rotting in jail, as usually they are not smart enough to anonymize their IP. :)

This reminds me a little bit of the movie Derailed with Jennifer Aniston.

Getting back to the OP, I can't understand why anyone would agree to meet in an isolated, out-of-the-way location where no one else would be, for what is essentially a blind date...unless...he was hoping to get lucky. In that case, perhaps let the bigger head lead next time.

Don't be stupid and reckless.

Got it.

I guess the low-rent thieves were lucky he wasn't armed and skilled in self-defense tactics. Remote camp areas make great grave sites. It can go both ways. Seen it.

In his defense, he is relatively new to the area. He was there last labor day weekend when the place has alot of people, so he was thinking at least some people would be there . LE wwas notified immediately and are investigating.

Someone is a fellow Kane Show listener??? :)

Why I always meet at a public place for the first few meets!

I know a girl who got date raped by a guy she met online at his house on their 2nd or 3rd date

In addition, need to report to eHarmony immediately and make sure profile is not setting more men up. Not that one report would justify action against profile, but they need to be aware of it immediately. Also would be able to look in their weblog at IP used for recent access by profile. (Unrelated to whether a request was made for it by LE eventually. Doubtful in my opinion.)

Is that where that's from? A friend of mine used that phrase once, and I liked it. I never knew where he learned it though...

Sorry, I'm not meeting anyone I don't know in a park, camp, cave, hut, car, whatever for a first date...even in broad daylight. We meet in a busy, public business establishment where I know there will be tons of other people. This has nothing to do with online dating, being new to the area, etc. It's just common sense regarding my personal safety.

Hopefully your friend will be a little more circumspect in his venue choices moving forward.

LOL! How about that disused aircraft hanger on the edge of town? Or perhaps down the docks at midnight?

The docks at midnight might be good. If you wouldn't mind, could you bring a body bag, rope, and a couple of rocks.

If not, let's meet by the freshly dug grave site in the cemetery outside town, say around 2 am.

Wow. Just wow!

You know the whole 'pre-date coffee date' ritual that everyone complains about with OLD? This is why it's a 'thing.'

Never have done this. Always a full-blown date.

This example is about being smart and going some place public when dating a complete stranger.

I've had ladies invite me to their apartments/houses on the first or second dates, not smart. I remind them that we have just met. Lucky for them I'm not a whacko!

It is hard to prove who did what or that there was a gun. Reasonable doubt would be everywhere as they turn on each other. Wouldn't be surprised if no one got anything.

Depends on the country and on how smart those guys were.

I don't think they were that smart tbh.

I'd never meet a total stranger anyplace that isn't public with plenty of people around.

Even a lone woman with a gun is still more powerful than a big guy swinging fists.
