Would you hit a dog if the dog was trying to bite you?

I love dogs but sometimes i wish i could beat a dog up or something because there are time when i ride my bike and they like to run and start to mess with me.

There has to be a law where if a dog starts to bite you, you have the right to hit the dog and the owner can do a thing!

If you a owner of a dog how would you feel if a person was hitting your dog?

Puppy nips- no

Survival - yes

Doesn't your town have leash laws? (I'm assuming you aren't riding thru your neighbors yards)

Speak to their owners- this is unsafe for people and the dogs. The animals could end up destroyed if they hurt someone or if someone else gets fed up and grabs their gun. You seem to want a peaceful resolution- I'd talk to the owners- and if that doesn't work get the authorities involved before the prob gets out of hand.

Here, it's illegal for certain kinds of dogs to be on the loose, plus we have super strict leash laws and pooper scooper laws.

Pit Bulls, German Shepherds, and Rotties have to be kept under constant supervision. If one is found loitering around, they're taken to the pound, and have one full week less to be picked up by their owners then other types of dogs.

Personlly, I think that its all in how you train the animal.

Anyway, sorry to ramble, back on topic:

Would I hit a dog?

Umm... I think that using aggression towards an angry animal would only make the attack worse, but that's just my opinion from what I've seen.

If it was playing with me and got too rough, I'd tell it "no" firmly, then move to more drastic measures, like a newspaper to the nose.

If I were riding a bike and a dog chased me, I'd probably stop the bike and walk it until the animal lost interest. I'm not an angry person when it comes to animals.

Its a dog's instinct to chase something that is moving. Also, they have an IQ of like 20, so they have no idea that if they nip at you the bike could fall and hurt both them and you.

If someone hit my dog, I'll admit, I'd be super p*ssed unless they had a really good reason. Like, if my dog put them in danger, and they were defending themselves, then I wouldn't be upset.

If they were taunting the dog, or if they just hit my dog because of whatever reason, I'd call the cops on them.

Also, if they're stray dogs, call the pound. That way at least they have the chance to get good food, a warm bed, their shots, and a chance for adoption.

I would have no problems punching a large dog that tried to bite me. I probably wouldn't use that level of force to disengage a pomerainian though.

so if a dog was barking as you 3 inches away from you..you would not do a thing?..or was biting your leg..would let him do it???? This your life were talking about here.

JUST TEASING, OMGOMGOMG. lol. :p

It would depend on the situation. If it was about to attack me, I'd freeze because motion attracts attention, plus dogs can smell fear.

If it was biting me, hell yeah I'd fight for my life. LOL. But, I said that already in my previous post. :p

If it bites you on the leg, kick it in the head. If it's just barking at you, don't.

Well, to them you could be a dangerous intruder to their property. They're dogs, not rocket scientists-if you do the same thing every day they'll do the same thing, unless you make friends with them and their owners. Take dog biscuits. It's their owners responsibility to see that they don't harrass passers by.

I don't know if I would EVER take any dog biscuits or any type of food to a dog who does not belong to me. That is a big mistake, not only is it illegal to feed dogs that do not belong to us, it is also glaringly immoral. Here in Oregon there was a dog scandal a year ago or so where there was an individual who was poisoning dogs in a local park. About five were killed, and many more were injured seriously and some for life, though they were lucky enough to survive.

Also, I would quesion any person who "wants" to "hit" an animal, be it dog, cat or anything else. That is just so incredibly offensive to me. I am an animal rights activist and a volunteer and if you find yourself being harassed by an unleashed dog, do what anyone else would do and contact your local animal control agency.

So, in MY opinion, NO you do NOT have the right to hit any dog you feel is bothering you, chasing your bike etc. Take a different route, contact animal control, but do NOT take matters into your own hands. Some people are so devoted to their dogs, were you to attempt to assault their animal, THEY may bite you or seriously worse could happen. Dog lovers are also sometimes GUN lovers as well. If you are wise, you will be careful, not careless. Be safe.

You could, of course, take a different route.

As far as dogs go, I'm the boss. If it takes a couple knocks for the dog to realize that, then that's what it takes. It rarely requires that, because posture and tone and being dead serious about it usually get the point across. Don't forget, dogs beat the hell out of each other to establish dominance. They understand that. They require a pecking order.

If I thought that I was in danger from a dog, I would most definitely attack it so as to disable it. I am thinking a few swift kicks to the face, or perhaps gouging its eyes out (As you would in the case of a shark attack), among other things. This, of course, would only happen if I could not effectively RUN AWAY and find a save haven.

Posted

Anyways knight, if you can't take a different route, and the animal still bothers you, and the dude has a shotgun, call animal control on them. The police, if you really are bitten.

Being an animal lover doesn't mean you have to let untrained, offleash aggressive dogs savage your flesh.

As a triathlete and cyclist I'm faced all the time by dogs that are chasing me (usually out in the country where people let their dogs run loose). Its terribly frightening. I've had a few close calls but have always managed to outride them. I've found that loudly and forcefully yelling NO! GET AWAY! will keep them from getting too close, and if that doesn't work a quick spray in the face with from a water bottle will also often do the job. I've never had to cleat a dog but if it came to that I would... but ONLY if this were a situation in which I was really really in danger (a pit bull, not a pomeranian).

For the most part, dogs chase because thats what dogs DO... its not neccessarily out of aggression. I'm not especially concerned about upsetting the owners, as it is their fault that the dogs are running loose. I worry more about hurting the dog, who is being put in a dangerous situation because their owner is an idiot.

FWIW, I'm probably the biggest dog lover you'll ever meet. :bunny:

Shoot, I kill puppies for looking at me funny.

Naw, but in Texas I'm somehow guessing you wouldn't have much of a legal problem.

The best thing to do is use a very loud, commanding voice when a dog steps up.

Posted

When this happens, I get down on all fours and begin to bark loudly, challenging the dog. Whoever wins, lives. Whoever loses, dies.

I haven't lost yet.

I kid, I kid.

get some dog mace. That way, if you ever are seriously attacked, you can disarm the dog with out damaging it.
