Asking another person their tastes/preferences = flirting?

I posted my situation on the LDR forum but for the sake of brevity I'm just going to condense it here: I simply want to know whether inquiring about one's tastes/preferences (what you would look for in a partner) would be considered harmless flirting or an indication of genuine romantic interest? As a woman I personally wouldn't ask of a guy's preferences unless I was seriously interested. I just would worry that it would give off the wrong impression and lead a guy to assume something more. I feel the same way about openly asking the relationship status of a person also.

Thanks, everyone! :)

This is a personal question. It is flirting. Any very deep, personal question, particularly when it concerns dating, is trying to establish a connection, and flirting. And everybody on some subconscious level knows that.
