mortensorchid Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 I was reading this article today that I found fascinating, and it was also due to reading some of threads that others had posted here. Someone was writing something about meeting someone online, and it got me to thinking. Are our lives more crazy thanks to the advent of the Internet? Yes and no. This article was written sometime in the late 90s when it was a new phenomenon that people were communicating through the Internet and then actually meeting face to face at some point. Now, it's not odd at all. It was also a new phenomenon that people would be leaving their spouse/SO for someone they met online. Some blamed technology for this, they said that this would've never happened if it wasn't for the Internet. I disagree. Adultery has existed since the beginning of time. There was a major sexual revolution after the invention of the Model T. Half the time if a person pre Internet wanted to communicate with others, they would use a landline rather than a cell, and now they are answering texts from their "other woman/man" which gives them more privacy. How much adultery requires the use of a car or telephone? I wonder how many were trying to tell their spouse/SO that they were unhappy and the other didn't want to hear it? And they were sitting on the couch, staring at the TV, wanting out? And this same couple was not appearing in public much togehter but seperately? How many times have you thought about someone else either when you were alone or with your long term partner? It all happens and we somehow don't want to hear it. So remember that when we are using technology, we've heard it all before. It's not new, all the problems have just gone digital.
