Author irc333 Posted March 7, 2013 Author Posted March 7, 2013 You do realize that is a bunch of garbage, right? Right? I've known some guys to emulate the characters, as if the method in the movie just might work.

JuneJulySeptember Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 ...it's one of those movies where a man is stuck in the FZ, and the happy ending is that he actually GETS the woman of his affections. :-) 10 Things I Hate About You comes to mind. Though that is not a healthy attitude for a guy at all. To chase. I do think movies make men think that can happen, but the success rate is low. Very low.
Archgirl Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 Pretty Woman: hookers are women who will fall in love with you and just need a big strong man to show them a lil tenderness 2
Els Posted March 7, 2013 Posted March 7, 2013 "She's out of my league" is probably the biggest male-chick flick there is. Moral of the story: Be as shallow as you like, because that 'solid 10' woman won't care that you're an average-looking college student living with your parents with poor social skills. When you get her, be sure to prematurely ejaculate, bitch at her about how she has no right to complain about her webbed toes, and feed her ego by putting down the other woman in your social circle. After you break up with her, she'll come running back to you and hijack a plane just to get with you, and you'll live happily ever after. 2

In reality, put the main character of that movie next to her ex boyfriend and he is going to lose hard with 99.9999% of all women. On the flipside, the ex bf would walk off with every woman in the room.
TaraMaiden Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Pretty Woman: hookers are women who will fall in love with you and just need a big strong man to show them a lil tenderness Yeah - and a few thousand dollars.... Do folks realise Pretty Woman is based on My Fair Lady, which is a musical version of the earlier film, Pygmalion? 2
Woggle Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I don't normally get on this gender role stuff but the fact that men are even getting into movies like this shows manhood is in serious trouble. 1
Archgirl Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 (edited) Yeah - and a few thousand dollars.... Do folks realise Pretty Woman is based on My Fair Lady, which is a musical version of the earlier film, Pygmalion? I always thought that was a nasty rumour, mind you all three smack a lil too much of male wish fufillment with weird sexual undertones for my liking - Pygmalion is also a greek myth about a lonely sculptor who basically builds a blow up doll out of clay and she comes to life  Edited March 8, 2013 by Archgirl
Woggle Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Didn't Pretty Woman have a mainly female audience at the time though?
SJC2008 Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I don't normally get on this gender role stuff but the fact that men are even getting into movies like this shows manhood is in serious trouble. Oh come on woggs there's nothing wrong with a chick flick every now ant then lol. I don't know if There's something about Mary is classified as a chick flick but if it is I don't care, that movie is hilarious!
TaraMaiden Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 Well, yeah, it appealed to women as a chick-flick, but really, when you look at the facts of the film - and those of My Fair Lady - and in turn, those of Pygmalion - you'll see it's also about a woman who is manipulated and manufactured to conform to an ideal visualised by a chauvinist male. The problem is, he does his job a little too well - and 'creates' a woman with a strong will and determined, outspoken and opinionated mind. The films - Pygmalion, (Wendy Hiller, Leslie Howard), My Fair Lady (Audrey hepburn, Rex Harrison) and Pretty Woman (Julia Roberts, Richard Gere) - all differ in ending to the original play by George Bernard Shaw, who in his play, does not unite professor Higgins and Eliza Doolittle, in the end. His play is far more 'ruthless' in its conclusion, whereas stage productions of the play almost immediately had the ending changed by directors to accommodate the wishes of the audience for a 'happy ending'. Shaw, quite naturally, was furious. 2

I like a love story every now and then but these kinds of movies are just pathetic from either end and apparently many people don't know reality from fantasy because they take them seriously.
Soxfaninfl Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I don't normally get on this gender role stuff but the fact that men are even getting into movies like this shows manhood is in serious trouble. I love chick flicks. I'm a sucker for romance. Romantic comedies are also great too. 1
dasein Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 There are lots of chick flick equivalents for men. They are called porn. 2
Woggle Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I love chick flicks. I'm a sucker for romance. Romantic comedies are also great too. Most of them are crap with a few exceptions. I actually thought Django Unchained was a great love story. He already had his freedom after helping out the bounty hunter but he went through all that for his wife. Now that is love. Not for one second does he ever emasculate himself for her or anybody else though.
TaraMaiden Posted March 8, 2013 Posted March 8, 2013 I like a love story every now and then but these kinds of movies are just pathetic from either end and apparently many people don't know reality from fantasy because they take them seriously. This has been happening since Rudolph Valentino appeared as "The Sheik". Women largely, have been sold this wonderfully fulfilling romantic scenario for decades. It's pap. Utter rubbish. Films ranging from "When Harry met Sally," to "Sleepless in Seattle" and many others i could mention, feed ludicrously unrealistic ideals to women and make them yearn for something which frankly, is unsustainable. No wonder women - who appear to mostly be the most emotionally Romantic of the genders - live life in constant disappointment, because they lament on a regular basis that their men-folk are not Romantic. Admittedly, men could make a bit more effort (by their own admission, I would hasten to add!) but nothing is ever going to be as nauseating as the treacly-sweet stuff that Hollywood insists on force-feeding us. 1
