lemonlegs Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 (edited) I don't know what's wrong with me, but apparently I like depressing break up songs. Nonetheless, even if they're sad, I find if I can relate to them, it helped me kind of vent my feelings and the lyrics resonate with me. These are more contemporary, and as much as I love oldies, these are just ones I thought of that are newer. Don't know if any of you guys have heard of Tegan and Sara but they're a Canadian twin duo. Typically they're folk, but their new album is a little more pop. Anyways, a lot of the songs are about break ups, at different stages of 'getting over it.' So I'll post some, and hopefully you guys enjoy! Feel free to post songs that helped you too. 'Now I'm All Messed Up' - As the title indicates, it's about a 'dumpee', presumably, whose ex-lover has left her in disarray (oh yeah, they're lesbians if you're wondering why they say 'she' or 'her') 'How Come You Don't Want Me' - This is one of my faves, typical break up song. Kind of like a plea. Attempting to understand why a lover doesn't want to be you with, and perhaps be with someone else. How Come You Don't Want Me - Tegan and Sara [Heartthrob 2013] - YouTube 'I Couldn't Be Your Friend' - This one is a little more upbeat. Reminds me of when you're almost at the stage of being 'over it.' Kind of turning it around and realizing it's not all your fault. I Couldn't Be Your Friend - Tegan and Sara [Heartthrob] - YouTube Seriously, their entire album is pretty much about losing someone and coming to terms, so give it a listen. 'I Run Empty' and 'Guilty As Charged' and 'I Was a Fool' are amazing. This one's really good for all the guys out there whose girlfriends broke up with them. Really empowering... you will NOT be broken 'Girlfriend' - Eve 6 - Really sad, but makes you feel good at the same time. Reminds you that you'll be sad and you'll miss her, but it will not break you. Great lyrics. I know they're poppy and newer but I hope you enjoy it, even if it's just the lyrics. Edited March 5, 2013 by lemonlegs
lovnlost Posted March 5, 2013 Posted March 5, 2013 Elliot Smith "Somebody That I Used To Know" I had tender feelings that you made hard But it's your heart, not mine, that's scarred So when I go home I'll be happy to go You're just somebody that I used to know You don't need my help anymore It's all now to you, there ain't no before Now that you're big enough to run your own show You're just somebody that I used to know I watched you deal in a dying day And throw a living past away So you can be sure that you're in control You're just somebody that I used to know I know you don't think you did me wrong And I can't stay this mad for long Keeping ahold of what you just let go You're just somebody that I used to know 2

Drummerboy420 Posted March 6, 2013 Posted March 6, 2013 That Eve 6 song nearly made me cry. I have to stick to more empowering songs. "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley is a good one.
Author lemonlegs Posted March 6, 2013 Author Posted March 6, 2013 (edited) That Eve 6 song nearly made me cry. I have to stick to more empowering songs. "Going On" by Gnarls Barkley is a good one. I know it's sad, but at the same time, it delivers a positive message. It's acknowledging that yes, it's not going to be easy, but you have to keep telling yourself it will be okay. PS, Sorry to make your cry Drummer! It makes me cry and I'm a girl!!!! But I think it's just a song about detailing a break up and how different it feels, and how much it hurts, but you have to remember, it too will pass. Just cause it has a sad melody doesn't mean it isn't empowering! Edited March 6, 2013 by lemonlegs
