This is a bit weird, but I recently got my degree and in looking for jobs, I came across one for a very local school district that would be a really great gig (in an area that doesn't currently have many). A job like this would allow my family and I to not have to move out of state until we're really ready and the perfect job comes along.

So anyway, I'm applying. I am doing research on the district and either they are expanding the department for which they are hiring, or the 2 currently in those positions are leaving (as posting is for 2). Now, I have the names of the individuals in the position and I see one of them is on LinkedIn, as am I.

Is it weird and creepy of me to maybe go ahead and apply, and then try to connect with this guy around the fact that I am curioous about the position which he fills? Is that what people do nowadays? Is that a major faux pas? Is the answer "it depends on the guy"?

Was looking for some networking insight!

I use Linkedin at work to hire with and when someone tries to connect with me that is also applying I never accept the request, how weird is that.

Linkedin is a business networking tool but one that you have to watch who you accept a request from. I only accept requests from people I know.

So I would just apply, make sure you look over his profile though as they will see you looked at it.

If after the job is filled even if you don't get it then hit him up for a request.

OH! This may or may not matter depending on th guy, but what if we both got our degrees from the same school?

How did you find out about the openings? Is it possible that by attempting to connect, you might be opening up a Pandora's box if they're trying to get rid of these two employees?

Actually, the position was floated by a professor whom I currently assist. Both she and I are affiliated with the same school that the person in question is affiliated with, albeit 30+ years ago.

It's hard to connect with someone on Linkedin if you don't have their email address or part of the same group.

Go Ahead. Don't ask for the job though. Ask for ADVICES and about the company. He might not accept your request but it doesn't hurt to try. I mean yes, he would likely to think that you just want to get the job, (which is true), but there is nothing wrong with getting to know what the job is about and the workplace, culture , etc.

I found out that a lot of people are actually very willing to help as long as you don't use them and throw them away.

I see no issue with networking with him. You are interested in the same field, similar degrees, etc. It really depends on the individual, in my field and industry I network with a large number of people, some are people I don't know. I don't question why they are connecting with me as I assume it is an interest in my company or my line of work.

Usually it means they want something from you

So? It's called networking. That is kind of the purpose. It is set up on the premise of quid pro quo.
