Dogs are a potential deal maker for me. If a girl has an awesome dog, or at least an awesome taste in dogs, she instantly goes up in my book.

Any furry animals are huge deal breakers here since I'm quite allergic to them.

You know not all dogs have the same kind of hair, right? My brother is allergic to dogs, but only a certain kind of animal hair. So he's fine with our dog.

Unfortunately, I'm allergic to ALL dog saliva, so I'd be ok with a non-licking dog (seriously, I get licked even once and that part of my body breaks out in hives and turns super red and itchy), or some animal I'm not allergic to.

I have bunnies, but they have their own room, so I can escape when my allergies get too bad.

I LOVE animals, but like the other poster said, if I'm highly allergic to something, it probably wouldn't fly.

It's sort of like smoking. I have nothing against people who smoke, but second-hand smoke makes me start to wheeze, and then I eventually stop breathing. It's not fun. :(

How immature that people are shaming someone for not being too fond of animals. Grow up people. Everyone has their likes and dislikes. This is no different from those who shame people for not wanting children.

Some folks enjoy their freedom and not having to constantly care for someone 24/7. If you like kids or pets...fine...but dont be immature and shame others for not being fond of them.

Also, while this guy living at home at 37 aint all that great...shaming him for wanting a dutch date is pretty silly too. Its 2013. The only issue I have with the guy is living home past 30...the other stuff is more than reasonable and hes allowed to have his own views on the matters.

Perhaps I missed a post somewhere, but did anyone actually "shame" people for having pets? All I saw was people describing their experiences and why it would be a deal breaker for them.

Ditto. I was looking back at some of the past posts just now and thinking "Where's the 'shaming'?"

I agree that it is similar to not wanting children. I don't see anyone shaming someone who doesn't like dogs. I do see that it can be a deal breaker for someone who wants dogs to have to give them up for life because someone else does not like dogs. I see it as an issue for a person who does not like dogs...why live with dogs for life when you hate them?

It is not because it is a like or dislike. It is because it is a difference that can be the cause of a major marital strife. I know...we have had them over the animals over the years. She is much less sympathetic to an animal than I am.

"You love those cats more than you love me!" A comment I heard a few times.

An issue I had with my ex-boyfriend is that...well, my dog was technically my family's dog. I only had the dog some weekends when I brought her to my apartment. When my boyfriend and I moved in together, he had his heart set on this complex that allowed no pets at all. He didn't choose the place because of that (he really didn't), but if I'd been with a guy who sort of likes pets, he wouldn't have minded that I wanted to keep looking for a place that allows pets so that I could have my dog some weekends. But he didn't think it should matter, and he just didn't care to let me still have the dog around sometimes. He wasn't an uncaring person or anything. He's a decent guy. But us not sharing the same degree of like/love for the pet posed a problem because I still wanted to see my dog.

It wasn't a relationship "deal breaker." Just something that I had to sacrifice that I wouldn't have had to if I'd been with a guy who's more endeared to dogs.

You cant be serious.

It's a question of compatibility - you know, like the "virgin at 35 versus divorced dad" thread? I have three dogs, and used to have more, before they died.

The first page? Which post?

here ya go.

Wow. Sounds like a real prince charming. Lives with his parents, hates dogs and goes Dutch.

I want to punch this dude in the face and I don't even know him. :p

Lives at home @ 37, goes dutch on first dates AND doesn't like your pets. My dear, 3 strikes, he's OUT!
Agree 100% @ JamesM.

I never thought I would encounter a man who didn't like dogs......It's pretty strange to me.

Why is not having a fondness for dogs being seen as strange? Why is it seen as an equal strike to living at home or paying for a strangers date?

And getting punched in the face?

Come on now...if this all isnt shaming, I dont know what is.

Wanting compatibility is fine...but the kind of reasoning given in those posts is rather off imo. For someone who didnt want a girl shamed for being a virgin, you cannot be blind to why I feel this guy is being shamed for disliking pets.

For me, a dealbreaker is a guy who hates animals or doesn't like them. Just my personal thing.

You are right. I missed that post.

I don't think anyone should be ashamed for disliking animals...even if it is viewed by some as unmanly.

It is not.

The question is...is it an issue that can cause major fights in a marriage? And the answer is...absolutely.

If compromise cannot be reached, then it could cause a split.

So yes, it would have been a deal breaker for me. Having said that, if I loved the woman for everything else but that, then I would probably hope that this would not be an issue once we became more acquainted. Looking at that view objectively... it is a naive one.

I think I misunderstood/misread what you were saying.

I thought you were saying that people were shaming those who liked animals not the other way around. :o

Kaylan, I'll freely admit to being an author of one of posters "shaming" people who don't like dogs, even though you didn't quote my post. I think shaming is a gross overstatement to what we were doing. I personally meant what I said in a far more teasing connotation than you're taking it, much like ribbing someone who roots for a rival baseball team. For example, I didn't write anything in my post that I haven't said directly to my boyfriend (who is dog neutral, but a good sport about my puppies). The difference is that he knew my tongue was firmly in my cheek and didn't get offended. I'd make the same joke if I found out he didn't like Doctor Who, for example, or pineapple. I don't literally think there is something wrong with people who don't love dogs, and I doubt many poster here do. At worst, it means they may not be compatible with us.

Of note, though, if I were to pick the nastiest serious post on this thread, it'd be RQ criticizing dog owners.

Oh come on. You must know by now my posting style. Of course I wouldn't punch someone in the face.

Lighten up a bit.

p.s. I'd probably want to punch someone who listened to Nickleback too but that's another thread.

Yeah, it's kind of a dealbreaker, but only in that I'm not going to get rid of my pet because you don't like animals.

The only animal I've never liked is The Cat With No Eyes That I Lived With In College.

I love majority of pets. I find most people who "don't like pets" end up being the people who love them the most so unless they really hate pets its not a dealbreaker for me as they always come round. My family owns 2 dogs and a cat, they're such fun to have! I plan on getting my own pets when I'm out of uni, got a good job and in my own place.

I love dogs, I have 2.

He dislikes dogs, his pet peeve is having dogs jump all over him and thinks they are too much of a hassle to own.

Would this be a deal breaker for you?

Yes. I'm with him. But don't take it personal. I don't know you. My dislike of dogs comes from growing up in a crowded house in a crowded neighborhood where privacy was at an extreme premium. My sister hounded my mom for a dog and when my mother gave in, my sister never took care of the pain in the ass. Then every time I came in the door this neurotic dog would flip out and cower and pee on the rug, or eat its own shi+. Who needs to see that every day? Then as an adult I go out walking for exercise and people in the burbs don't train their dogs and think they can just let them run around in the yards. They go nuts when you walk by and act all threatening because their owners haven't led them to yield territory. They often startle me and raise uncomfortable goose flesh. I hate that and carry pepper gel. I don't want to have to spray someone's dog in the snout with that stuff but I will if one gets over the fence and comes at me. Then I'll have a hard time from them and probably the police where I was only minding my own beeswax and trying to get some exercise. Dogs need real room and they need real training and people in cities and suburbs often provide neither and let their animals noise and menacing spill into everyone else's comfort. Fooey.

I have a cat and if someone really hates cats then I'd prefer to know up front bc that would be a dealbreaker for me. Thats fine if people don't like pets but my kitty is very important to me and I baby her. It annoys people who DO like pets  so if someone doesn't like pets then I know we just wouldn't work.

I have never been an animal person, they scare me. I am scared of dogs, but I never viewed a guy having one as a dealbreaker because so many people do have them. Now if he had a dog that he didn't take proper care of (walks and such) or a dog that was not trained and was aggressive...that'd be a dealbreaker. But a regular dog, that's fine even though I am not a dog person.

Haha Jesus. I live in a VERY dog-friendly community and I've never felt the need to carry pepper spray.

Funny this is brought up.

I am a HUGE animal person.

The boyfriend is definitely NOT.

That being said, he didn't make it hugely obvious he didn't like animals at all while dating, so if never came up early in the dating stages. I knew he wasn't a fan, and he doesn't understand the "animal person" mindset.

Since we have been together for some time now, he is fully aware that if he wants me he at some point will have to put up with some animals in the house.

It is kind of cute actually, I had to get rid of my cats [since we were moving in together, our place is tiny and we don't really have time, plus he doesn't like them] and I straight up told him that while he may not understand, it was very emotionally hard on me and that I needed his support. He then started going on about how once he gets back from France and he has more time, we could look into getting a dog. :D

It would have been a deal breaker for me if he made it clear he NEVER wanted animals ever! I could tell he had a little soft spot though, and he truly does. He just isn't an animal person.
