Haha, I sympathise! A bad last name (or first name) might make me less attracted initially. However, it really wouldn't matter once I got to know someone better and it certainly wouldn't stop me dating or marrying him. There are always options if you decide to marry someone with a truly awful surname; he could take your name, you could keep your name, you could change the name completely, or combine it somehow (e.g. Woodcock + Mann = Woodman). My current beau has an unusual surname beginning with Z but it is distinctive and I actually rather like it.
man_in_the_box Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Someone I know has a last name that is literally "the blowjob giver" in Dutch. 3

Do bears poop in the woods??? The problem IME is with people's mothers who go absolutely volcanic when someone within earshot brings up the subject of a legal name change. To me, a name is like a label on a bottle... but to the average mom, a name is like a bronze plaque on a monument---you DO NOT F*** WITH IT, even if you have a last name like Dumfart (yes, Joseph Dumfart was a real guy). All through school, I got picked on and nearly driven to suicide because I had a fun-making last name... but when I made the mistake of telling my mean old mother I wanted to change it, she started tearing her hair out and I got a sobby lecture about sacredness, blah blah. Some people are waaaaaay too fetishistic about names.
Feelin Frisky Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I never liked my last name. Kids used to call me by it and slur it into something and I hated that. I gave much thought to a "stage name" at one point where I was getting a chance to succeed in media. It didn't happen then but when I think about publishing I think pen-name, maybe using my middle name as my last i.e. James Thomas. I'd rather not have an ethnic Irish name like I do although I'm happy to be Irish. 1
yongyong Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Was he a black guy with last name 'white'? 2
Keenly Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Does a rose by any other name not smell as sweet? My last name is also a common first name. Confusing.
Crusoe Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Does a rose by any other name not smell as sweet? No, but if was called sh*t you'd be less inclined to pick it up and sniff it.
MidwestUSA Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 Poor Richard Dickhead. I kid you not, an author, look him up! 1
kaylan Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I personally think its shallow and stupid. Someones name isnt going to alter my attraction to them. Their looks and personality is what control my attraction to them. 3
Geiss Posted February 25, 2013 Posted February 25, 2013 I have somewhat of a bad last name and I have had women say numerous times that they would never marry me because of it. Even if they can keep their own last name. But I don't care because it's my family name and I'm not changing it for anybody.

Not all of us are superficial and want to marry someone based on their last name because our lives are miserable. Sucks for the guy you meet with a last name that's "attractive" for you. Too bad you are going to use him to give you a kid and his money 1

jcrew11 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 A good friend of mine actually changed his last name to his wife's last name, because of his unfortunate last name, similar to weiner. It was very confusing at first to see his facebook profile, because I thought he had been hacked or was someone I didn't know.
ltjg45 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 While my last name is not outright weird, I personally don't like it so I have little issue changing to my wife's last name if I ever do get married. Unless she has an even weirder last name, in which case, I rather just share mine.
El Brujo Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 No, but if was called sh*t you'd be less inclined to pick it up and sniff it. Sh*t is sh*t, but it can make flowers grow. A good friend of mine actually changed his last name to his wife's last name, because of his unfortunate last name, similar to weiner. They made a big stink about that a couple of years ago here in CA... some guy whose last name was Womack had to go all the way to the state supreme court to get the right to change his last name to his new wife's last name---Ryan. Here in CA, a person can get a legal name change for $375 if they do their own paperwork, add $400 to it if you get a lawyer to do it for you.
FitChick Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 My first husband's surname was Woodcock. Was i ever glad to file that to the woodburner.....! It could have been worse, like Cockburn. My college roommate's gyno was named Dr. Hiscock.

I heard a long time ago that you don't need to legally change your name but if you start using a different name you cannot do it to defraud. Then after a certain period of time it automatically becomes legal. Have no idea where I heard that and don't know if it's true.
harnold Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 My first husband's surname was Woodcock. Was i ever glad to file that to the woodburner.....! That's actually the most awesome name ever. Serious. I want it. EDIT: maybe Ironcock would be better. Still though.
Yamaha Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Don't tell me you sit around and scribble/speak their last name out and see how it sounds with yours? Find someone who hates their name. Maybe you can get them to legally change their name? Should make you both happy!!
GSB81 Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 Unrelated, but I've never met a hot girl named Gertrude. Just saying.
bolase Posted February 26, 2013 Posted February 26, 2013 I went out with a guy whose last name is Screech. It was never going to last the distance, but if it HAD, no I would not have taken that particular name!
